Is there a way to constrain the move brush to a line? I know the curve mode line function will be constrained to a line but it
doesn’t give me the results I seek. Is there another modifier combination that will work?
Something that may do the trick for you is to turn off Transform >> Modifiers >> Xyz. You can then turn on any combination of the adjoining switches. Doing this will restrict your brush to only operate along the specific axis that you’ve specified.

Well, that was symmetry. What I was talking about is something a bit different.
Transform Symmetry mirrors what you do across a specified axis.
Transform Modifiers prevent editing except along a specified axis.
Each is capable of being turned on and controlled separately.
