Fish Man ! ^-^)/

just cant convince myself that this sss stuff is worth it on this model.
spent the last 15 hours configuring it not to mention the weekend
learning everything i could about it.
i tried 7pm to 2am yesterday and all day 9am to 10pm today trying
everything to make it look good but i couldnt,
it just looks like trash compared to alot of
other work i have seen with sss but in my case im not impressed.
can someone please say something here, suggestions comments anything please!
p.s. the high radius and depth was intentional.

LEFT normal prefered setup, RIGHT the sss version i cant find a passion for.
p.s. both are non photoshop filter colored maps, just base.

Aceala,

I’m new to this program and what not myself, so definitely not a expert. However, I’ve found the skin shaders help the most with the correct lighting. I downloaded Kris Kosta’s (a.k.a antropus) clay shaders and lights. Then I adjusted the settings on the shader to get what I wanted out of them. The lights do the rest and add that umph quality to the image once you do a best render with shadows, SoftRGB and SoftZ turned on. Can feel free to try that by visting his site since he so generously has those as freebies.

The biggest thing about your image is the structure isn’t convincing. Could be refined. That said keep at it, you show you work hard and do have ability. :+1: Hope info somewhat helps.

AngelJ - he is rendering in Maya…with a SSS network…not zbrush…
and what do u mean by the structure isnt convincing?

nice work man, keep at it. dont give up!!!

Ohh maya didn’t realize. As for the structure, the head is too small particularly in the back of the head compared to the face. Arms and legs could be more filled out compared to the chest region. Food for thought.

first post on the thread shows a link to concept work if you look at
the 2d section. i’m not going for realism, it’s a character design that
is slightly abstract. my favorite artist is
amano yoshi.taka(swear filter, no period in his name),
and most my art and concept derives from his style.
not to offend but i prefer to portray this preference.
with that said i’m looking for a 2d painted style but at the same time
portrayed in the 3d world.

Aceala,

I also enjoy various japanese illustrators and there stylizations they portray. My comments are just my first impressions of what I saw of your design. Anytime I comment on someones work its just my view and my intention of trying to help. Continue working hard and looking forward to seeing more.

Aceale,

I love this guy! The textures are coming along. There are a few modeling things that to me seem to be detracting from the overall character. With a guy that has a chest as larg as his I would think that the arms / bicep’s need to be a bit bigger to off set the chest. Also, the top part of his arm looks a bit shorter than the bottom. If you were to add some length and girth to his bicep, as well as give his forame some more size, I think it would help to balance out this character.

These were the only things that I saw that could detract from the overall awesome character you have created.
