First Zsphere Model

Hey ZBrushers,

So… To be honest, I’ve never really messed with Zspheres (embarrassing, I know).
I saw a forum post this afternoon where a guy did some really incredible Zsphere work, so I had to fire it up and give it a go.
I decided to try and model a hand using Zspheres as the base, and this is what I came up with.

Obviously, some things are a bit out of control… The palm looks pretty chubby right now, but I intend on sculpting everything out once its converted to an adaptive skin. I’m more or less experimenting with the basic form at this point.

As a new user to Zbrush, I would really love any tips/tricks/comments/etc that you would be able to share!

Thanks for taking the time to check this out!

Hey there! Nice job with the hand. I use zspheres often and for hands they save me. Hands seem to be rather complex. But the chubby effect in the palm is going to happen. It is the case of you trying to visually preserve the volume of the hand within the confines of a sphere. just get it looking good and the use a sculpting brush to carve away the excess. Even the flatten brush will prove help helpful. I also add a zsphere for each knuckle and zspheres in between to help to define the knuckle, you can slightly shrink the zspheres the are in between the knuckle. Or you can sculpt it out if you wish. Make sure the zspheres force the knuckle to the top… you dont want to have them coming straight out the middle because then you have a “tube” that just inflates at that point. you want it flat under the finger and “knuckled” out on top and to the sides. Anyway thats what i do. Its the same process I used on my lizardman. Good luck and that pose looks great!

[SUB]Hey Sixto,

Thanks for checking out my ZSphere model!
I checked out your Lizardman sculpt, and I see what you are talking about.
Your hands look like there is a boney structure under the flesh, which really reinforces the hand-like properties.
I’m going to experiment with placing the spheres in between the knuckles as recommended, it sounds like that will really help make
the fingers look more like fingers.

Thanks for the great tips!

So… I’ve been experimenting with sculpting out this hand, but I’m not getting the results I want.
It either looks too bulky, or too thin.
As much as I sit here and look at my hand, I cant ever get anything that feels right…
I want a hand that looks like it has some meat and bones underneath the skin.

What are the tricks?
I see people everyday on these forums that post absolutely insane human models…
Am I missing the Holy Grail Brush in my version of 4r2?

Tips please, tips…
