First zBrush sculpt...new to community

Hello all! Let me first say that this community is great! I’ve been a lurker for a while and I finally got to try this program. I don’t have much 3D background so being able to create this is really a feat for me. I hope you guys like. It’s another alien, and was inspired from a video tutorial i saw. C&C are very much welcome. I hope to be adding to the zBrush community more and more.

I found the shader and light set up in these very forums.

welcome noyboy…beats the tar outta my first post thats for sure…hahah i was thinking about that today in fact…trying to find my old firsts for a play in z3…anyways…

keep playing…best way to learn! enjoy the freedom.

Hey, great 1st piece! And welcome! You’re well on your way to creating some awesome works! I look forward to seeing your progress.

not that i am in the position to be offering advice, but what my eye tells me is go deep on this. the base, and lines all seem great, I would just carve them deeper, and pull some out further. also add a splash of color spots in the skin and maybe materialize the eyes, then I’d think it would be that much more. cool stuff!

Thanks guys for all of the great comments, they really mean a lot. Pixologic has really out done themselves with such a fine program. I’ve tried many other 3D apps, but nothing makes it easier to create models with such fine detail. After I finish coloring this guy I’m gonna work on a real humanoid model. Either sculpt out a figure of my dad or make a woman. I’ve never done either before but if I’m gonna be a CG designer I might as well start learning.

I really need a Wacom tablet. Trying to be precise with a mouse is like trying to snipe a target with a cloudy scope. Oh well, I’ll make due till then. More to come!

Precision isn’t that hard. It’s actually the reverse that you need a tablet for – capturing the random imperfections of every stroke is what makes everything feel so natural and intuitive. (it’s all about the pressure sensitivity)

Anyway, I think your problem has a two-part solution:

  1. Turn on LazyMouse when precision is called for.

  2. Lower your Z intensity and build slowly over many strokes.

That last bit is good advice even when you do have a tablet! This video is the best free one I can find to demonstrate that point, but if you really want it hammered home, pick up a copy of Zack Petroc’s Digital Sculpting DVD

Hey Ctrl-Z, thanks for the link to the vids. I’ve actually watched that 3Dbuzz vid about a million times already =). The pressure sensitivity is also another thing I really want from the tablet. When sculpting, I usually don’t have my zIntensity any higher than 20-30, usually its in the 5-15 range. But still, drawing with a mouse is tough.

I’ll definitely check out the digital sculpting dvd though. Hopefully I can get this model colored tommorow. Every minute with zbrush I find something new and it’s really great =)
