First ZBrush Model

Greetings,

So much talent here it’s incredible.

I worked in the games industry 10 years as a Lead Character Artist. About 5 years ago I (somewhat retired) began traditional bronze sculpting. To say the least, clay sculpting what I wanted was just way too slow. My long-time friend/co-worker G. Callahan, a ZBrush guru, has been trying to get me into ZBrush for years. So, over the past few months, I got Ryan Kingslien’s tutorials and created this, my first model, to be bronzed using 3D.

But, as a newbie, I got it to 9 million points, on my old 1 GB RAM machine, and spit out some stl files in the range of 1GB. So, I’m reducing the filesizes, to get the entire thing printed at AGS 3D in Houston by my friend Bary. He sent a video of the first proof of concept for the body only, but it’s a great start with exciting possiblities for other work!

wheres this newbie ur talking about? i cant see him

outstanding work great hairs.
Did u create them external or are they zsphere?

I love it. I really like the video of the RP model! Can’t wait to see it with the wings!

:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

excellent! i can’t wait to see the print with the wings…thanks for sharing the turntable video.

really quite impressive for a first time go at Zbrush! :+1:

I really like this sculpt.5 stars and a cookie from me!!

wow, really awesome indeed!!

wow ! very beautiful !
a future top row !

Thats lovely for a first work, impressive!

I love how u did the hair, and it’s a great piece! In fact how did u go about the hair?

…1mb Ram?

WOW !! …what does it say on the plaque?..

beautiful piece.

Great model! It definitely shows how a good background in art helps.

The hair is awesome and it held pretty well in printing.

thanks for the comments! I’m only humbled by some of y’all’s own portfolios! The more I look at what’s here, the more I’m awestricken!

I made the hair with about a dozen different lopoly helii in Max, with various heights, coils, and diameters. I imported them, and manipulated many different clones with the move and inflate brushes. There are prolly 80-100 coils and a mushroom cap sitting below the coils to give it solid appearance. I was concerned if I could print this directly in wax, to then be bronzed, but it will work. This would be almost impossible if I had to make a rubber mold of it and obtain the wax positive traditionally. Eventially, this will be for a life-sized bronze.

Often in my career, I’ve found you’ll have a daunting obstacle, like I had with the hair. The live model, Dasha, had very curly hair, and I thought, I’ll tackle it last; I wanted to keep the feel of her flowing hair somehow. I was thinking to just make it one object, and manipulate the @#$ out of it. But then, I started to play with the coils, not knowing if they’d turn out. But after I looked at it freshly enough times, it turned out to be one of the best parts! Wait long enough, and it solves itself it seems! haha! At least, that’s my technique.

I’m working on streamlining a feasable process, to export large tools from ZBrush and get them to manageable STL files for the printers. I’m trying out a STL manipulator called Magics. It’s seems pretty cool tool. I’ll update, when I get it worked out more.

Anyone else have some suggestions for this? My problem, is, I want to be able to create what I want for renders, but also manage it easily for the printer. For now, I have to keep the model broken up to export manageable obj files, that I then read into Max, and export to stl. What would be nice is ZBrush to stl. Anything like that in Z4?

I’ve also figured out, what I shoulda done was kept more of the geometry levels alive, instead of collapsing most of them, like I did for the wings. But, I had to, to mirror and use the move brush on them as a whole. If I left them as many subtools, they became unwieldy! catch 22! still learning.

Hi,

see post #60.

I’m just amazed by this so beautiful piece of art!
There’s something in it… This is pure art!

5 STARS as well! :+1:

Paul again, looks amazing! Call me up when you need some test files for your printer!

Very nice piece Paul!

I would love to see the life size bronze if it ever comes to be realized.

Thank you for sharing your info and technique on the marvelous hair creation ! Very generous of you!

Great work !

thanks everyone! It turned out so cool! I picked the test print up Friday, and the more I look at it the more I’m amazed it can be done. You can even look up under it and see the face! I’ve since tweaked the model a bit.

I’m reviewing some new solutions (given to me by others) that’ll streamline this process… they’re very promising. I will update that info in the near future.

The test-print was done on a ZCorp 510 printer; I’m going to aquire one soon I hope. Barry said the printer made 1300 passes on it in 3 hours, and you can barely see the levels. If you look closely, you can see small grains (see stills I put on video link above). This resolution is fine for bronzing without touchup. It’s printed in cellulose, that’s then dipped in various binders. A hardening resin was used on the body test print and it feels/weighs like sandstone.

I’m going to get two more prints of the angel soon, one of the entire thing in resin and another dipped in a wax binder which I’m going to invest (create ceramic mold and burnout) and bronze, as maquette size. I will try to upload these images when I get them.
