First Sculpt - Tripod Creature

Howdy all,

So, I downloaded the Zbrush Demo the other day and finally got a little bit of time to play around with it. Followed the tutorials, got a feel for how the Zspheres, Polypaint, and all the different brushes work, and this is the result. I didn’t have a concept in mind at all, I just threw it together. I really, really like this program a lot. I find it way more friendly to use than Mudbox (which I downloaded a demo of as well, compare and contrast and all that). I wasn’t going for any kind of anatomical correctness, just trying to see what I could do with everything that ZBrush has to offer. I’m definately sold. Any comments/critiques would be great, got a lot to learn yet.

Hey, BradMick, that’s quite a good start there. I wish my first ZBrush model was that good. I was struggling quite awhile before getting the hang of the program. But once you do, you will definitely…be addicted to the software.

My only suggestion would be (As it has work great for me) start at a very low subdivision level try to block out the form you want as much as you could before moving up to the next level.

Good luck in your ZQuest. Pop in questions if you have any, this community is a warm one. :+1:

Welcome, good advice so far… Also at the top of the page, far left of image row where it says ‘MORE GALLERY’, everyone of those threads will provide some tidbit of useful information. Post often, ask questions, someone will direct you to something cool and useful!

Appreciate the advice gents! I put it to use a bit in this little sketch i’ve got going. It looks terrible at this stage, and I don’t know that I’m going to finish this one, I think I did everything I set out to accomplish which was to make a character, see if I could use the poly paint tools without reference to the tutorials, and try to keep the proportions of the face reasonable. The oversized forehead, and well overall overly wide face kind of shoots that down, but i’ll chalk that up to it being more of a characature than a real attempt at modeling a realistic head.

Oh, in so far as proportions go, as a rule I was out to keep the mouth no wider than where I figured the pupils would be, and the ears not much higher than the pupil line and not lower than the nose line. Are those reasonably in the ballpark for facial proportions? I’m not much (at all) a character guy, always modeled spaceships until now, so any info and experiences in that department would be awesome!

Good progress… BTW, at the very low subdivision, you can just use Move Brush to put verts/poly to wherever you want. and able to block out quite fast. For anatomy stuff I always check this site: http://www.reybustos.com/03ra/ra.html and if you would like to spend some cash this one is definitely a good catch for reference figure: http://www.freedomofteach.com

Look forward for more stuff from you

Very good start.

You’re trying to do too much at a hi-resolution (we all do it!), try working rougher at a lo-res and working up. Just like in real life, so clay, you start with a clump or blxk and either add or remove rough areas, each pass working in detail (increase resolution).

At the bottom of my signature is the Eternal Zsphere Thread, not that you have to use Zspheres, but in it I’ve shown some blocking to get from something simple to a useable head and perhaps you can see the reasons. Quite a few talented people have posted their versions to that thread as examples of how far things can be taken. Most importantly - why you should start lo-res blocky and work up.

Many other such approaches exist all over the forum and these steps will really help you.

Very nice sculpting.

Follow up to what I mentioned just posted by another fella…
