First model - Having issues with smoothing

Hello everyone

My call for help is as vague as it gets but bear with me, I’m new to all of this. Basically I’ve been getting into Zbrush these past few weeks and the sculpt I’ve been doing has more than a few issues. I’ve tried to come up with a solution myself by checking the Pixologic-website aswell as several video-tutorials but ultimately couldn’t fix anything. I hope you guys can help.

a.) The body is split into a head-subtool, a neck-subtool and a subtool for the rest of the body. I merged these three subtools into one mesh and exported them into an OJB. The model is now inseperable (which I wanted) but the subtool-edges are still visible and can’t be smoothed out. What can i do against these hard edges?

b.) I made head aswell as neck out of two seperate spheres. Whenever I try to smooth out some detail at the points where the polys converge (the poles if you will) I get a spiky surface rather than a smooth one. How can I prevent that from happening?

First off … wrong forum

Using merge subtools will only give you the desired result, when the points are perfectly aligned, which in your case they are not. Now in order to have one mesh, there are a couple of ways to do that. You could use Retopology or the Remesh feature. Both work pretty good, and as you still don’t have a lot of detail in that mesh it shouldn’t be a problem either way. Just read up on that a little on www.zbrush.info or search the forum.

Hope that helps.

Finally replying! Sorry it took so long.

First of all, thanks for your quick reply. I went ahead and tried out both of your suggestions. Retopologizing just won’t do it for me, not at my level of “expertise” anyway. I’ve lost the low-res-mesh in the process of making the model and right now there’s just too many polygons for me to handle.

Anyway, making a unified skin of the merged subtools worked pretty well but trying to realign some of the symmetry that was lost in the process will turn the skin into a complete mess. What’s the deal with that?

Hey there,

what do you mean by realigning? If you mask off half of your mesh and use Smart symmetry under Tool/Deformation, it shouldn’t be a problem. If you continue to have issues with that, just post a screengrab with Polyframe on and i’ll see what i can do.

Also you really should look into Retopology, as it will be the best solution for your problem. Don’t be afraid  it’s really not that complicated.

Hope that helps
