First Model, Avian Soldier WIP

Hello everyone, like several of my NEIA classmates here, we are just learning to sculpt in Zbrush. This is my first model beyond limited anatomical sculpts. The design is an attempt to sculpt a typical soldier from my existing repertoire of two dimensional work.

As seen in 2D (animation). http://tristikov.deviantart.com/art/Avanian-Soldier-animation-111369580

And for the first time in 3D

The hands have not been finished let alone transposed to be properly holding his rifle, and his left wrist is practically broken! The rifle needs a new base mesh I think because the polys on it run lengthwise and any vertical detail just isn’t happening. I haven’t been too successful with adding ‘hard’ detail like buttons or other crisp edged, raised items, especially mechanical details on the rifle. I might simply need to switch to my more powerful comp and turn up the subdivision level? Lastly, the pose is still kind of wonky because I originally sculpted him in a rigging position and then transposed from there. That also killed a lot of the original folds in his coat.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Or if anyone knows of any particularly good tutorials, that’d be awesome too!

pretty interesting character, reminds me The Garuda in ww1 uniform
keep an eye on the details

Hey really nice models you have, I really like the Yuki WIP! What subdivision level do you have to get those detailed wrinkles in the pants?

Awesome work =>

I love the clothing and the goggles on this guy, it’s looking fantastic so far, especially after Zbrush did it’s sepcial save-quit thing on you, keep it going

Hey Tris!

Massive improvements! It looks really awesome already.
For the wrinkles, I suggest drawing masked lines, and then using the move tool on the unmasked areas. You can smooth it out after… But it gives the suggestion of wrinkles.

Really nice pose btw

hi
there were 5 or 6, as I remember
and I used quite good photoreference(made myself btw :D)

Here’s the display spread I made for the midterm. Some of the alpha detailing is not present in these pictures/difficult to see, so I’ll post some new close ups soon.

Pretty good for a first try, but IMHO there are way too many form/anatomy problems.

Case in point the hands dont even grab the weapon, is the gun glued? The feet are really rough as well.

I think you should not be discouraged, but should really study more anatomy. Good luck.

Modeling anatomy or at least trying to pose it in zbrush is much different than just drawing on it paper, so I’m still getting the hang of it. And yeah I won’t lie I didn’t even attempt to pose the fingers. With three other animation classes there is a lot to manage at once. Just compare the quality of the sculpt with the quality of my frame by frame flash I posted as a reference.

work on the rifle a bit more give some detail

I think the goggles and face are my favorite bits so far Tristan.

Like they said, just keep working on it, I know I will on mine despite the grades… :frowning: hopefully something can be done about that.

more time would help for sure.
