First decent anatomy study (Still WIP)

Simple pose.

Relocate the three heads of the Pectoralis Major. The Clavicle head inserts lower on the Humerus, so your armpit is too high. You need to work on the forarms, would seem you have quite a bit of bow in the left one.

Vastus Lateralis should be higher than the Vastus medialis, and he seems to have no Rectus femoris?

It seems that you have made his Olecranon from his Humerus, where its from the Ulna, and should dive down between the Flexor Carpi ulnaris, and Ext Carpi Ulnaris. Its in the back view you realy see this bow in the forarm.

It seems that his Traps are over powering the Spine, and medial border of the scapula. I would go over the anatomy all over the body, and give a good check over. If you want to study pose, Try on a much lower res model, you dont need high details to pose, a stick man can even be used. This would free you up from too much anatomy work, and give you more time for posture, weight, ballance, and emphasis on the pose. Last thing, try and crop your images, as they take up a huge amount of screen room. I think its already been mentioned, but work on individual body parts, your see far greater progress in each of them if you do. If fact just chop up your character into parts, and work on them on by one. Keep up the good work, and keep enjoying it.

Is this pointed at the complex pose or the simple pose? forgot to crop the renders, sorry about that. Thanks for the feedback!

Sorry I was looking at the simple pose. Get the best refference images you can get with many angles, copy what you see in their bigest forms. Take a look a Zbrush Digital sculpting by Scott Spencer, thats a good book to get some quick things down. It takes the complex and makes it simple. If you work off a refference, then you can post your model, and a small refference side by side on here so people can see what your trying to aim for. Look at the origins and insertions of every major muscle, and do a ecorche drawing over a still image of your model.

Keep it up.

Average guy study. I wanted to break away from the muscular young guy with and average build, but this time the face did not turn out like I wanted.

First round of renders, will pose later. Feedback would be appreciated.

Hey there!
I’m not an expert but there are few things I notice are wrong:
The abdomen muscles - upper part of “six pack” , the first band doesn’t sit below the thoracic arc
only somehow on it. The third band starts just above the navel and ends ± on same line as rib
cage ends.
Also the thoracic arch on males has more or less 90 degrees and the iliac crest should be a bit lower
or the whole pelvis.

Hope this weill help and i’m not talking nonsense

You’re not talking nonsense, mate, you’re right about the abdominal area; will work on that and move on to another, more refined study. Thanks for the feedback!

Zsphere rig skeleton. Want to know if you guys have any suggestions to improve it.

Yes, another body builder study. LOL! Zbrush render this time.

i really dig how you inproved on your anatomy. good job man. but before i send this mesage i would like to mention one thing i think is wrong
well your torso mucules are resting in the torso not On it. i mean it looks like you cut the outline of the pectoralis mucles into the torso oposed to laying the pectoralis mucules on the torso
its kind of hard for me to explane what i see wrong here. but if you understand, good.
keep at it man. your doing a great job so far!.
cheers

You mean I didn’t lay the brush strokes to create the pectorals and just carved the outline of them? if this is what you mean, that is not the case. Perhaps the matcap I’m using is giving that impression or I have to adjust the pectorals. What about the back? Do you think the area of the Teres major and minor should be higher? Thanks for the feedback!

Small update.

i can see in thie sillioyte that the torso mucules are about the same hight like the rib cage. yes im sure you added the brush strokes. but you cut into it abit to much i think. but thats what i think. and the back mucles seems pretty good. its alot better then my anatomy. but thre is a cave in your torso part that im seeing. keep at it im sure youll find it out
cheers

I realized that you were right after looking at the model more closely, so I pinched the bottom of the pectorals to close that cave. Thanks for pointing that out, dude.

New female study (WIP).

BTW, I would like to get some tips on sculpting facial likeness. Thanks in advance!

Hi, good work on the last pieces! I like the muscular guy muscle definition. I’m no expert on anatomy at all, but on the female model, there are some small issues to be addressed to make the model look cooler. From the side view, on the back of the neck, it seems that the transition to the torso is too rough, it needs to be smoother. Also, from the front, the sternocleido muscles are too wide where they meet the clavicle. Don’t exaggerate forms when doing females, do smooth strokes, for example on the knees, the elbow. Ok, here’s a tip for exercising(I think I already said this in a previous reply but I’ll just say it again). Don’t start with base meshes. Zbrush has evolved so much that you don’t need that anymore. Try doing the models from a sphere or zspheres whichever you feel comfortable with. That way you will have diversity in your silhouettes. And don’t forget about references; always have them in front. About the likeness… Likeness is not hard, but it needs a lot of practice. When doing likeness you need to have good understanding of human head and face. Try to do the face from planes or starting from a skull, this is the academic way I think. I did not learn to do heads like that, but I found out later from Ryan Kingslien’s tutorials. You need to, first, do a believable head, any head. You need to feel at home when you do a head. And for likeness, some people are more expressive, they have certain features that stand forth; this likeness is achieved more easily. And of course, are those people, that are more generic; you need to observe subtleties. This kind of likeness is more tricky to achieve, but it’s not hard, you need to just be patient and have a clean head and eyes. And you need references, front, side, 3/4 view, preferably in the same lit environment with the same appearance. Some persons look different with beard for example, a different hair style. And of course, there are the beautiful women. This kind of likeness is the trickiest to achieve only from sculpture. A good texture, with the makeup, helps a good sculpture. When doing females, put some kind of form for the hair, after you sketched the big forms. Like I said with silhouettes, practice doing heads from a sphere. I think you already have a good understanding of anatomy, you just need more practice and very important, patience. Try to take a break from that, and do some heads for a start. Here are some good references for starting sculpting a head:

There are tons of material on the web about head sculpting, these are just an idea.

I hope this helps you on your path of becoming a better artist.

Good luck, you’re on the right track, keep practicing!:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:
All the best!
