First Character in Zbrush

Hi, this is my first real foray into Zbrush and i’ve hit a couple of little snags. Firstly, here’s what i have so far:

and here is the issue i’m having; whenever i try to get past lvl 6 sub devision, this happens

i get those odd “spikes” and was wondering why they show up. The base mesh is from Zbrush central and i’ve tried re-topoing the mesh, but the strange spikes even appear there. someone please save me!

Did you post the same picture twice? I really don’t see any difference, nor do I see any “spikes”.
