First attempts

Added a little more skin detailing and tweaked the lighting some more. Also increased the chin size. Boris Karloff apparently got his from Jay Leno’s House of Chins!

Keeping to my theme of classic movie characters, I’m currently roughing out the features for the Charles Laughten version of Quasimodo. Working without symmetry on is like doing a flying Walenda act for me, so let me know what you all think.

Update with color and skin detailing.

Quasimodo’s coming along there, Gary. I definitely see Laughton, particularly in the top color render in your last post.

Have you considered opening up his mouth a little and doing the teeth as well? I think it could really bring that likeness out a bit more.

Anyway, you and I clearly share some favorites! I don’t mind saying, this particular movie kinda ruins me emotionally, every time I watch it.

I was thinking the exact same thing regarding Laughten’s portrayal of Quasimodo. It’s a shame in a way that it’s been thrown into the monster movie genre (not that there’s anything wrong with that in itself) when really it’s a gut wrenching drama. Quasimodo is one of the most sympathetic characterizations ever written, and to call him a “monster” because of the horrible deformations of his face and body frankly says something a little sad about humanity in general.

Thank you for bringing up the teeth. I only looked at the reference images I’ve collected a couple of times as I was roughing out the forms of his face, and I got so involve in the minor detailing that I forgot to split those lips an add some teeth. Okay, back to the stylus!

Added teeth (thanks again Terry for reminding me), revamped the lighting and tweaked the spec and transparency settings for the eyes.

After a few more tweaks, I have my final render. I think…

I loved the slightly paler eye. Looks really neat! There is a slightly strange… glitch? In the hair though, on the left side. I don’t know anything about fibermesh though, so don’t quote me, but something looks off in one of the groupings.

Either way, lots of fun! Did you try mask by cavity at all? There are some great wrinkles in there that could benefit from a little bit of darkening.

It’s confetti? Lol, yeah it’s yet another thing I noticed after I’d posted the render. It’s strange because it’s not visible in preview but only shows up after rendering. It may have something to do with using smooth to shorten the hair. I’ll go and comb it out tomorrow. I didn’t think about darkening those wrinkles but that’s a great idea! I’ll have to try that too. Thanks Rykka!

Sure thing! It’s mostly an excuse to spam mask by cavity. A feature I have an unhealthy love affair with. Can’t wait to see it!

One more update for Quasimodo.

Oh my god…
And YOU said you couldn’t deal with organic sculpting???
HA!
That is a bunch of great stuff, I love not being on ZBC for a bit, I get to come back to things like this!

GRIN!!!
Awesome work!

As that guy in Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail said, “I got better.”

Here’s an update of Frankenstein’s monster with better lighting and a waxier pallor.

Working on Boris Karloff as the Mummy now. I’m pretty happy with everything but the eyes at this point. If anyone has suggestions, I’d be a happy man.

A couple of mat changes.

Your just speeding through all of the classics. What next the Wolf Man, The Bride? Dracula?

Hi Gary :)…Having fun with the program I see…:D…Luv seeing all of these classics being revisited and worked on…:+1:
Maybe on the mummy…have some of the tape frayed and peeling away in different areas exposing the underlying layers of tape beneath it, and some of the edges of the top surface taped areas weathered, jagged and torn…more so than the underlying layers type of thing…Alot of variations in the tape might really enhance the feeling of the passage of time…Just passing thoughts that might be useful to you…who knows…

Glenn

I am thinking either Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolf Man or Sr. as the Phantom of the opera. I’m not sure I could do Bela Lugosi because his story is just incredibly sad after his success as Dracula. Doing the Bride does interest me, but the hair is pretty intimidating

Glenn thanks for the suggestions. I was working on doing pretty much what you said even before you posted, so far I haven’t come up with any interesting results yet. I was able to enhance the edging of the bandages by masking the cavities, inverting and then filling with almost pure black and then going over the edges with a small sized pinch brush. I’m going to keep working on it and see what else I can get. I’m learning more with every sculpt, so that’s a good thing!

I decided to touch up my horse sculpt.

Thats quite an awesome horse, which brush did you use for sculpting the hairy details on the tail and the head?
