First attempts

Oh man, you must have been posting while I was writting the last comment. I like THIS last image even more. The ripples are cool. But make them suddle. Best.

Hey, Dragon! Yeah, the purple was my color blindness rearing its ugly head again. All of my “color checkers” are snug in there beds, while daddy doesn’t get enough sleep and visions of zbrush stuff dances in his head. As for the reflections, that’s something that I’ve been obsessing over all evening, but haven’t found a way to do it in zbrush yet. I know I could do it pretty easily in Photoshop, but I’m really wanting to keep this one totally in zbrush. Oh well. Maybe I’ll get a few hours sleep and have a revelation in my dreams. The sleeping part sounds good, but my wife HATES it when I wake up screaming “EUREKA”!

Its 3:22am and you are inventing ways of making water in ZBrush???
This is wonderful!
I cant wait to see where this goes, Im making coffee!

And now I feel guilty for sleeping for three hours… Thanks, Mealeaying. Thanks a lot. Seriously, I just woke up… at my keyboard… good lord, this is getting out of hand. But in a good way!

Changed background and still messing with the water.

Holy mackerel thats nice!

Also feeling guilty about being infatuated with ZBrush is silly, its good for you. Notice I caught you at somewhere past 3:00am? there is a reason for that.
GRIN!
Just make more coffee and you will be fine.

Thanks, Mealeaying! I am so loving doing this one and I can’t wait to do more! The first few times I tried adding a background in zbrush, I guess I just didn’t push as far as I am with this one. The backgrounds never really seemed to match up as well as this one does. The best thing about it is that the image is big enough that there are numerous views I can use it from, and my model is also big enough that I can swing the whole thing around to get any number of final renders out of it. I’m already collecting reference images for my next environmental piece even though I’ve still got a ton of stuff I want to do with this one.

Gotta go for now. The tv show “My Strange Addiction” is calling. What in the world could they want?

What?!?!
Did I make you notice that you have an addiction to ZBrush?
GRIN!
I have it too… it wakes me up at outrageous hours and makes me try things.
I think I understand some new stuff as a result of last nights insomnia.
If I’m right there will be a new tutorial in my thread soon, partly this is your doing.
I have been looking at your stuff a lot (I know I haven’t commented much, and that’s your fault too; you keep giving me ideas!!!)

I knew I was having trouble with your threads, I posted one thing and it never showed up so I posted another and POOF they both show up.
This could get confusing… and its been happening for a while.

Weird. Maybe that explains the lack of reaction to my fantastic work! Anyway, here’s the latest update. Still looking for the elusive perfect angle. Finally added some more detail to the lodge. Changed the angle slightly although I’m probably going to change that again because I want to see the water in the background as well as the foreground. Also resized the arches to make them scale better with the rest of the scene and did a minor update to the gazebo. Still working on the water a little.

Pretty close to final here. Thoughts anyone?

Even though the model and background don’t match up that well in this angle, I’m really fond of this one.

Switching to Dwarves now.

That is a very rectangle dwarf!
How are you doing the lettering, is that an alpha?
That looks very good.

Mealeaying; That’s the top of Balin’s Tomb from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Yes, it’s an alpha I made from an image i grabbed somewhere. Unfortunately, Zbrush decided to do a crash and burn while saving the tool last night right after I posted the render here. Luckily it was about 5 minutes of work lost, with three minutes of that counted towards making the alpha in Photoshop, so it’s not a big deal to go back and recreate it. I got frustrated after that and decided to use the frustration to face a different frustration of mine, organic sculpting. <gasp!>

I posted my three favorite renders of Rivendell in my Finished Works Thread so if you guys would go there and give me some feedback, I’d really appreciate it.

Here’s what I started working on last night. I need to elongate the neck and legs more because he looks a little too humanoid for what I want right now. I’m trying to do this the right way, and for me that means not touching Dynamesh unless I absolutely have to. I started using Zbrush right about the time of the dynamesh update and while it’s a fantastic tool, it always seems to push me to want to finish things up without getting the basics down first. So I’m doing this one the old fashioned way. Started with a Zsphere base which became an adaptive skin. This is really the first time I’ve been at less than a million polys this far into a sculpt, so feedback is a necessity at this point.

Hmm. The avatar selection thing is giving me fits. Let me see if I can figure this out.
