When you perform a tool stroke on the canvas the Z position is determined by the settings in the Picker palette. By default this will set the center of your object at the same Z position as the background pixols, and cause clipping of your 3d tool.

There are a couple of ways to change the Z depth.

1 ) Draw your model on the canvas and enter Transform Move mode. Click+drag outside the gyro to move your 3D tool forward/backward along the Z axis of the document.

2 ) Set Picker > Z to a negative value such as -1000 and draw you model. Instead of sampling the background pixols the z depth of the stroke will is set to -1000, for example. A negative value is towards you and a positive value is away from you.

3 ) Simply draw the model first and add the background afterwards by using a plane3D to position and scale to fit.

4 ) Use two document layers. Draw your model on the one layer and fill the document on the other layer. Then offset the pixols along the Z axis with Layer > Displace Z. Again, a negative value is towards you and a positive value is away from you.

Hope that helps
