File Error - Answered

I got the FILE ERROR popup containing “Error has been encountered while trying to load a Tool. Loading has been aborted.”

I had saved my file, and then my PC’s power was disconnected. When I turned it back on, the file was there but would no longer load.

Is it possible to fix this file?

There are file protection algorithms in ZBrush to prevent a corrupted file from overwriting a previous version of the file. However, there is one unavoidable vulnerability in that feature: If the power goes out while the final write is taking place then only a partial save will have happened and the file will be corrupted.

It’s a one in a million (at least!) chance that this will happen but there’s absolutely no way to avoid it – short of having a UPS to provide battery backup, anyway. The bottom line is that the file was only partially written because the power outage interrupted the process. It can’t be recovered.

You know I was wondering if maybe the file was still in RAM or something because I made sure it had saved before we touched the power. It had definitely saved before we touched anything. Could it say it saved, but was actually continuing that process in the background?

The work was lost but it might be something you want to check out?
