In the fibermesh panel you can choose to rotate the fibers to give the hair a curly look, or open the preset, but grooming the fibers causes them they lose all the curls by doing so. Not sure if I’m missing something obvious, but if you can’t groom and shape the fibermesh before accepting it how are you supposed to be able groom it w/o losing the details you added in the modifiers tab?
You keep certain properties of the hair but when talking of the overall shape it is lost. That kind of shape is only Ok when you are happy with what has been automatically generated with gravity etc. Mostly fur effect, plants or short hair.
There are tutorials to make the hair in different shapes grooming it alone, that in general are quite complicated and require of high skills for long hair. Unless you are happy with something simple.
Even you can get good results with good technique don’t expect a perfect workflow as for example Hair in Maya.
