Fibermesh issue on clothing

Hey,

I’ve built some clothing for a figrue that I’m working on, and have spent an hour or so trying out Fibermesh on a jacket to simulate fur/ cloth strips. The results look great, but I’m having a really big problem:

The fibers are appearing inside as well as on the outside of the mesh.

The first model I tried this on was just a 2D skin (so no depth to the cloth), then I extruded the cloth to give it depth and still have the same issue. I’ve tried masking, un masking, checking my mask and… I’m out of ideas.

Does anyone have any tips about this? I’ve tried searching, but to no avail… I realise that if there’s an answer it’s probably obvious and I’ll spend the next day kicking myself…

But any help anyone can give would ge greatfly aprpeciated.

I’ve not included screenshots, because I think it’s pretty self explanatory… but what’s explanatory to one person, isn’t always to another. if you need clarification, please let me know - above all, thanks for any help!

Cheers,

Jim

If you have a mask, Fibermesh will appear only on the masked portion. You will have to mask the area that you want fibers on. You will have to use BackfaceMask so you are not affecting both sides. Make sure you turn on BackfaceMask while holding down Ctrl. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but I’ve tried this. For clarification, please see the attached render:

Here you can see a polysphere from which I’ve deleted some faces. I’ve applied a mask to part of the poly shell, and have run fibermesh. The issue that I’m having is that the fibres appear on the inside of the mesh; you can’t use backface masking here. because there are no other faces to effect. The hairs traverse the 2D topology of the poly shell; this happens no matter what settings I use for ‘Imbed’. All ‘Imbed’ does is vary the degree to which, in the example shown above, the hairs move towards the convex or concave, but no settings that I can find can actually just make the hairs grow out of the exterior, or convex, aspect of the topology.

The above example is with a 2D topological form. If I give this shell of polygons thickness, it makes no difference, and no matter what masking settings I use, I still get the same error. This is the same with the coat that I’m trying to cover too.

I can’t believe that I’m unable to completely prevent hairs from growing on the inside of an object… am I missing something?

Hmmm I’ve tried this on the jacket again, and actually it’s not a problem anymore. The current version of the jacket has thickness to it, and it works fine… this wasn’t the case yesterday, so maybe zbrush just needed a restart  lol, I should have thought of that first

Thanks anyway, everyone

Let me explain what is happening in the image you posted above. You had Display Properties > Double turned on when you activated the FiberMesh > Preview button. Make sure Display Properties > Double is turned off before you activate FiberMesh > Preview. After you activate FiberMesh > Preview, you can turn on Display Properties > Double and the FiberMesh will only be on one side.

Thanks anyway, everyone
LOL, I’m not everyone, I’m just me.

Hey zber, thanks for that, makes a lot of sense; thanks for your help!!

No worries! Cheers.
