FiberMesh Help

Hey guys, apologies if this has already been asked (i’ve looked through the forum but can’t see anything related). I’ve been having trouble getting decent results with fiber mesh. In the first phase in the fiber mesh drop down tool menu I seem to be able to get decent looking hair using the presets and changing the values myself. Then as soon as I hit accept and move onto to grooming I start to hit problems. First problem I’m having is getting a nice shape just using the groom brushes. It seems that when I try and comb the hair back it also pulls the hair out along the z angle and I end up with very ‘bushy’ hair. Is their a way to add gravity to your strokes while grooming? I know there’s a gravity function in the first phase but that seems to get overwritten as soon as I use the grooming brushes. One way I’ve been able to get a decent shape is to use the more traditional brushes like ‘Move’ and ‘smooth’. With these I seem to have move control of the overall shape but when it comes to rendering I get strange lighting errors, I’m wondering if this is because Move is causing the hair to collapse in on itself. Another thing i’ve heared is the overall scale of your model makes a different, the preset fibermesh settings apply very long hair, i have to set it back down to about 15 to get it looking right, is this too short for the render to work properly? Anyway heres an image of the results i’m getting, if anyone could tell me what i’m doing wrong it’d be appreciated

Hi there !

I’m not sure i’ve understood exactly all of your problems, but I think I understood pretty well the first one. It happened to me, and after trying out a lot of things for few days, I seem to have understood how it works.

Maybe i’m doing it wrong, and maybe it’s not the right way to do it, in this case, I apologize for giving you bad advices…

When you wanna comb your hair, you must not comb it with all the subtools visibles. When I try to comb hair with the subtool on which the hair is attached visible, it does like you said. It “pulls out” the hair, and it’s really not natural, and ugly. So i just make my fibers the only visible subtool, and like that you can comb it the way you want. It can be difficult because you’re doing it “blindly” but just try to hit the eye button a lot of times to see what you’re doing.

Then I never use the regular brushes to move my hair. Sometimes, I use move, but usually I use “Groom Lengthen” to move it.

And if your hair are kinda flat, or like you said, seemed to have “collapsed” on itself, you can try the “Groom Turbulence” brush, with a very big size.

And about the problems you have with the presets… Well, yeah it’s usually really long, but you can do as you did, just set the Length of the fibers to a small value, and it’s gonna be allright.

I’m sorry if I didn’t help you, but that’s the way i’m doin’ it

Again, I’m sorry if what I said is totally bull****. The fibers are kinda new, and I couldn’t find proper tutorials on it, so I just tried out a lot of things myself, did tweakings for days, and ended up with pretty decent hair this way…

Cheers
