FiberBrush erosion

Just played around with ZBrush and came up with an interesting little trick.

It just didn’t occur to me until now, that you can actually use the FiberBrush in ZSub mode to give the surface an interesting, scratched look, as if brushed with a steel brush:

The above was created by using the FiberBrush with a Thickness of 3, low Density and high Turbulence (to randomize the direction of the scratches) with a normal “dots” stroke. The Z Intensity was very low, about 3 or so, while the Draw --> Height was quite large to increase the scratches’ length. Try different settings for various interesting results.

I then drew onto the surface with a BumpBrush in ZAdd mode, using a DragRect stroke to distribute the brush’s effect evenly on the surface. The BumpBrush “inflates” the bumps and narrows the crevices between them, creating an interesting bumpy surface that looks like a tongue, or a toad’s back:

I then Undoed the BumpBrush stroke, switched it to ZSub, then made the DragRect stroke again. This time the BumpBrush carved away and expanded the scratches, creating a crater-like surface:

Well, here’s hoping some of you will find these useful!

Hi Skaven
You have discovered the power of Zbruh to paint in 3"DVolume"
Zbrush can it resume in Zaad Zsub Zcut
With that, maybe you can make something for the rock challenge !
Pilou

great tip! ive never thought of sub’n the fiber brush hehe!
Ill use this a lot with texturing. thanks!

hehe indeed , I used it once by accident
neat effect

Ah yes!..you’ve found one of many powers of Z. Its tons o fun hu?! Don’t forget about Zcut. Also, try the spray stroke when subbing. The random size and spread help for a better, more natural look (not to mention the time it saves in not using drag rec). Here is another trick for you if you havent found it already. The blur and the glow brush act as an active smoothing brush when ZAdd/ZSub are the ony things turned on. This helps to blend seams together. Also, the differance between the glow and blur brush (in this respect) is that the blur brush will smooth out seams and corners/ridges where the glow brush will ignore the ridges…try it out.

Happy ZBrushing!

HI shaven…thankyou for sharing this with us…it makes for a very cool looking affect.
I was under the impression that could be done while in edit mode for a model, but ofcourse it not the case…

I’d like to ask if its possible to achive this effect while editing in 3d mode, would be very useful, great for adding subtle details.

thanks once again for sharing shaven

all the best

Kircho

Kirch, when in edit mode, go to the transform palette and add a touch of noise to the edit curve…then edit the model…have fun and don’t faint…lol.

Hi Mahlikus The Black ,
Thanks for the tip mate…I was aware of this option before, but thankyou for taking the time to post an answer

I was looking more along the lines of actually painty wrinkles and scales , just like the effect Shaven has reached. Although this sounds like over kill…with the inclusion of Normal map generation in the next release…it will give the artist much more control over feature placement then painting the a 2d displacment map, then mapping that on to the model

Maybe Pixolator can include this feature in the next version…scritped brushes would be cool( generate you own patterns and such) …oh don’t mind me…I’m in dream land again ;)!!

thanks once again Mahlikus The Black
May I ask how you achived this effect(sclaes) : http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=011124

cheers

Kircho

the last one…the scales? That was made by masknig a grid and fooling around with the inflate. I will see if I can recreate the scales part…

Yep, this is a lot of fun…

Uh, Kircho, it’s “Skaven”, not “Shaven”… :o

Wasn’t that meant to be done with material settings rather than paint techniques?

Sincere Apologies Skaven…I ment no disrespect … :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Kircho

Hi Skaven
For the Pix rock challenge just the result count doesn’t matter the technic

Hey… no problem.

As a matter of fact people mis-spell my real name (Peter Hajba) way more often than my demoscene handle.

Cool technique :+1: I’m sure it will get a lot of use

I had been wondering if you were one and the same demoscener skaven of FC

you get a decent amount of play on nectarine radio

I have known Clementine
Pilou

Thanks Mahius and Shaven  for great techniqes

Ha ha, “Shaven” rules

Works great! :+1:

Used it to prep the surface before MTB’s Distressed Z technique (in the Rock Challenge thread)

Just practicing, so it’s not much – but it did force me to learn how to control the fiber brush

Hi Havran
You have now an infinite fields or research of crazzy textured Objects

ps Crazzy = twice crazy
