FIber mesh fun

The render turned out great Rick, you did a fantastic job on the likeness! That is definently a creepy one and love the fleshy parts on it and the fibers turned out great aswell! Always a pleasure seeing your work man!:+1:
Cheers,

  • Kenny

Thanks guys, no way that it’s better than the original. The original is classic. I worked on him more today I think he is looking better and closer to Dick’s original.
I am rendering now will hopefully be able to put the passes together soon.
Nicko, to answer your question, too much time. I’m still trying to figure out how to use a lot of the new features I spend a lot of time moving sliders and rendering the moving sliders and rendering and so on. I also render one then look at it figure out what i want to change then basically redo a bunch then repeat that numerous times.I have fun though.

Outstanding! The likeness is spot-on. Like it alot. Makes for a nice ghoulish desktop wallpaper.
Youtube has a cool video entitled Forest J Ackerman and Dorian Gray Prop head you might of noticed.
Keep at it. Cheers!

Its nice to know that we aren;t the only ones that have to tinker to learn the new features as well.

The original had the limitations of its medium. You also have limitations of your digital medium, but you also have a ton more time to work on it than I’ll bet the developement time of the original had.

I prefer some of the famous monsters cover art to the source material artistically as well, and suspect when you get done, I’ll have the same opinion of this as well.

Your Rick Baker? Wow, Awesome Werewolf.
The best Werewolf has to be ā€œAn American Werewolf in Londonā€ hands down

Keep posting Mr. Baker love your style

best,
R

Looking Great! This is so cool and so gross! haha I also love that its sitting on a clay table, and has raw clay towards the bottom. It’s very unique.

Hope all is going well

Really love this little guy Rick you’ve really mastered the fibermesh!

Haha, yeah Rick there is a lot of that going on with my creations too!!

Lol just realized you had done an american werewolf, that movies scared the crap out of me when I was 10
I kept thinking about that wolf in the early part of the post, the intensity of the snarl got stuck in my head
and I was reading this before It hit me

Of course I know its you but just forgot you did the FX on werewolf.

Thanks for that link dman! It’s a damn shame that a lot of the various artifacts from movie classics like American Werewolf are used once and then forgotten like that. I saw some pictures of the metal armature of the original King Kong not long ago, and of course the outer ā€œcostumeā€ part had just rotted away over the years. Movies are a huge part of the history of the twentieth century, but many movie producers treat the props like disposable items. Very sad, but I’m glad there are people out there that are willing to give their time and skills to restoring these things.

Yeah, he did American Werewolf. I used to live in a rural area in Nebraska, watched American Werewolf with a friend then we went wondering and got lost out in the prairie land… There were no roads to stick to only had the moon light haha…

Ok I’m calling this done. I think it is closer to the original Dick Smith head which I first saw in issue number 17 of Famous Monsters.
Dick did an article on how he made the head and it was one of the major reasons that I started doing what I do today.
I will be forever grateful. I was so honored to be able to present him with a special oscar this year.
This was all done in ZBrush, renders composited in Photoshop. Hope you like it.
And yes I did American Werewolf in London over 30 years ago probably before most of the people who post on this site were born.
I probably won’t be posting much for a while after this here on ZBC as I am going to go back to work on my book about my career.
I want to get it done while I still am alive.

That is amazing! nicely done.

Wow Rick, incredible, you’re an inspiration man! like I said before I’m quite new to all of this, zbrush and the community and such. I knew of you as the FX guru, I couldn’t believe it when I saw you posting the incredible Zbrush work on ZBC here, makes me glad I made the decision I did to start using this software and explore my dream of making monsters too. Thanks man, I’ll for sure read that book when its done!

Looks fantastic Rick, and I love hearing the story and your appreciation for it. Most people here have started for a similar reason when they found a work when they were younger that inspired them, and it’s really cool that you are active here on ZBC progressing along with everybody. It’s a constant inspiration that I can guarantee pushes a lot of people to work harder and get that much better. I know it has for me personally on more than one occasion, so I have to say an infinite thanks to you, and I’ll always be looking forward to more from you.

Cool Mr. Baker

I will keep an eye out for your book.

best,
R

Great job Rick :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1: I’d say you nailed it.

One of my regrets is selling off my collection of those magazines in a swap meet in 1973 if my memory is correct. As a kid I never missed an issue from the local Rexall Drug Store. Never missed that one or Mad Magazine.

As a kid, I also wanted to do exactly what you do. That magazine had a lot to do with that.

My Sister, twenty four years my senior, left a box behind with all the older ones and I had a complete set through 1969 I think. Wish I still had them all. Oh well

I just pulled the dongle out for Lightwave which I still hate even though it’s the one I have. Your using Modo I think, seems I saw some posts there of yours a while ago? I do this for a hobby and find Lightwave tedious beyond reason, so I’m considering Modo instead of upgrading LW.

Anyway, thanks for sharing with us. Time for me to lay the other software aside and try out all these new features. I got sidetracked around version 3. Looks like some great stuff happening with ZBrush.

Blaine

Amazing, you did great job man. I really admire your work and it’s great how you’ve learned how to handle cg.

Thanks guys.
Blaine, I fortunately still have my Famous Monsters but unfortunately did get rid of my aurora model kits which to this day I still regret.
Last year I did a couple of cover paintings for the new Famous Monsters which I was kind of jazzed about. like I said that Magazine was one of the main reasons I do what I do.

Yes I am a modo user but have hardly touched the latest version though I am anxious to. I too have lightwave but haven’t upgraded to the newest versions.
I like them both but I found modo easier to work and you don’t need a dongle it is also good for mutual machines which is cool. It hasn’t quite caught up with LW with all of the features but close.
You must play with the new stuff in ZB .I have been having a blast doing so and am sorry that I have to stop for a while.
If anyone is interested I can post a bigger version of Dorian I rendered him large .Anyways it has been nice being back here on ZBC and playing with this amazing app.

ā€œNow I know I have a heart, because it’s breaking.ā€ Rick, you know that just because you won’t be posting new work doesn’t mean you have to be a stranger, right? Watching your work and reading your comments these past few months has motivated me to become so much better than I was, and I know that’s true for a lot of people here. And please be sure to let us know when the book is ready. I will be looking for it!
