Faceting displacement error, help please

I exported a 2048 32bit displacement map as a tif and converted it to .map. However i seem to be getting a strange faceting error. Where have i gone wrong? This has happened to me before, but somehow i bypassed it, cant remember how though.

I was rendering in maya software rather than mental ray.

I’m getting the same thing on Mac 3.12B and Lightwave
