Extraction - Thickness

Hi.

I’m trying to make a simple ‘hull’ shape to use as the basis of a tail light for a car. I’ve made my shape in ZBrush and tried to use the extract function to give thickness but it always gives a ‘curve’ to the edge of the geometry where I want it square and flat. I’ve tried ‘extract’ off of a half-shape and a whole-shape but I get the curve artifact always. I’ve extracted at low res and hi res and masked at each extreme but always the curved edge. I’ve also moved it into Maya and used the extract function but the result is two unconnected hulls. The Maya geometry is closest to what I want but I can’t connect the pieces. Can someone please guide me into how I can make this shape into a piece with thickness for glass without a curved edge? Thanks!

It looks to me that you “E Smooth” (edge smooth) settings in the subtool palette extract section are set too high. Try bringing that number down to 5 and work from there.

Thanks, Nan!

Definite improvement.

However, I’m getting what appear to be arbitrary ‘creases’ near the edge. I understand the creasing directly on the edge but I don’t understand the creasing further up the hull.

Thanks!

Someone else with more experience and a better eye then myself will hopefully be able to diagnose your problem from the pics you posted and chime in here. Meanwhile, try adding either a bit of “polish” or “relax” from the deformation palette. Start with a small amount.

Also, although your edge smoothing has been reduced to remove the inward bowing of the edge, you might need to increase the overall resolution before extracting if you are getting a “stepped” effect.

Thanks!

Attachment transparency shows I’m gettin’ closer.
