Extracting only one side of a mesh in 4r4

Using 4r4 because I’m still using windows XP (I know) and can’t upgrade.

I extracted a shirt from a base mesh. Now I want to extract something off the shirt, but doing so gives me two layers of it that’s nigh impossible to mask off. Is there a way to get only one side of it without the Double option in 4r5+, or a way to remove the mask from inner faces, or must I get a new OS?

they may already be grouped. if not try auto group. then delete one group.

you need to turn on backface masking in your brush auto masking options before you mask so it doesn’t grab both sides.

This would definitely be what I’m looking for, but I made a bad example mask in the pictures–what’s really going on is that I need to mask something off the collar of the shirt, meaning the two extrusions are linked:

Which makes it impossible to auto group as separate meshes.

I do believe that this is what I want, but whether it’s on or off and no matter what the intensity is, both sides are still being grabbed for me.

maybe try inflating a good bit by a specific amount, then paint one side red, deflate by the same amount, then mask by color.
there’s got o be some way t do it

Which makes it impossible to auto group as separate meshes.

Use group by normal and set the angle around 20 or so.

Then you can isolate the group that you want to mask.
