extracting a pice of my mesh

i am no pro at z brush so i askin for some assistance

i have created a full body character in zbrush, but i wish to sepparate a pice from him for… character rigging. i need about from the shoulders to the complete head. now i have done this by masking off the area i want and then “Extracting” this seems to work fine even though it smooths out some of the detail. however, i can not seem to reconstruct the lower sub-div levels of the newly extracted pice as i have masked and extracted from my full body character at its max sub div, 7. the reason i can not reconstruct the lower sub divs is that zbrush is saying that there are triangles, so there fore it wont work.

does anyone know the remedy for which ales me?

thanks in advance if you can help

What you should do is go to level 1 and hide what you want to split off. Press Tool>SubTool>Split. This will convert the hidden portion of the mesh to a new SubTool. Select that and export it.

Wow thank you so much aurick. To put it simply… problem solved :D:+1:

new issue has sprung up. i cant seem to creat layers for my newly split-off piece? why is that?

Did your model have layers before you split it? If so, your layers will be locked by the split. Layers are a form of morph target. Splitting the model changes the point count, which invalidates the morph. ZBrush will retain the details from the original layers, but you won’t actually have them anymore.

Here’s what you can do:

Go back to your original model. Turn off all layers and then split it in exactly the same way as before. Now append this new model as a subtool of the one with the layers. Go back to the highest level and create a layer. Use ProjectAll to transfer the details from the original to the new one. You’ll now be able to create new layers.

I see what you mean. before i had a chance to read your response. i had already went back to the original and turned on all layers, and then deleted them to make them permanent (that was the plan anyway). I then did the split action again. this time on my new head tool in the layers palette, the buttons rename and new layer are active, but they do nothing. what could be the cause for that?

thanks for your time aurick
