Exporting objects (Most likely a newb question)

Hey guys. I just started using this program today and really enjoy it.

But now I’m running into the issue of figureing out how to actually USE it in anything. I was afraid to just do a flat export because I feared that it would export all the polygons and that would be a definite NONO to load in any program on this computer. (i.e. over 2 years ago)

So I looked around and people kept mentioning displacement maps which would be great but they all seem to require low poly versions of the model which I don’t have. I only have what I made in Zbrush. I SUPPOSE I could go in another app and just make a low poly model with a shape similar to this one because it’s rather simple–a cup–but I’m not totally sure.

Can someone point me to a tutorial that shows how to export a model that was 100% created in Zbrush? That would be great.

The other apps I’m using are Carrara 6 Pro and TrueSpace 7.

As I’ve said, I’ve looked around but these all talk about importing low poly models and then making a displacement map.

Or do I just have to go in the other program, make a low poly version, and then export my cup as a map and stick it on as displacement?

Thanks again.

Oh, and here’s what I came up with after just two hours with the program…

If you don’t have a low poly cage mesh, you can create one in ZBrush.

Go to subdivision level 1 or 2. Turn on Tool>Geometry>Cage. This generates a low poly mesh that you can export to another program. While Cage is still turned on, create your displacement or normal map.

If your model doesn’t have multiple subdivision levels, then you’d need to use retopology to create a multi-res mesh and project the details onto it from your source mesh. You can read more about retopology in the online documentation. See my signature.

Ok. Thanks. Hmm. I subdevided it a few I think.

Oh well I’ll make sure to do so next time.

Caging… it sounds like it should just be able to look at the overall shape of the object and make a flat basi shape off of that.

Well anyhow thanks.

Hmm… I thought I uploaded a picture but I can’t find it… Oh well.
