Kia ora,

This is my first WIP post!!

I have been working on this Basilisk character for a while. He has the head of a Rooster and the body of a serpent and can turn everything living to stone with its deadly gaze. He is an EVIL character from Medieval Bestiary.

I am using Maya Mental Ray to render and am having a variety of problems with the 2 applications that subsequently affect the final look of the creature.

In ZBrush it is very difficult to exactly place lights…even with the light widget.

I also can’t retain the materials that I create in ZBrush to import them into Maya to be rendered. I am using the Material baker plugin but I never seem to be able to get one Final texture, but rather a hhole lot of snapshots. I am using AUV tiles so I don’t even know if this is possible. I think that even if I did get this to work properly it would be unhelpful because I want light and render in Maya and the lighting would be baked on….which would be bad. I also can’t get exactly the right displacement in Maya either…close but never perfect, I am using the Zatt6 plugin and the ZDisplacement Exporter plugin. This means that I have lost a lot of detail,…very unfortunate. If anyone has any help or ideas or if anyone reading this just happens to be in Wellington, New Zealand then it’d be fab to get you to come show me. I am loosing a lot of detail and it’s not much fun.

This is for a BIG University assignment, Bachelor of Design in 3D Animation, due in 2 weeks and I am doing a series of 5-6 shots of this guy… so if you have any crits or comments (or help) they would be most welcome. I also have another character, a hippocampus, who I will post later.

Cheers.

Rachael

Very awesome huh!
I think it’s fantastic. Very cool texturing and magnificiant materials…

5 Stars… :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Wow … so much detail. Maybe the comb on top of the head looks a bit random and crude compared with the body detail. It doesn’t look like feathers and isn’t convincing as flaps of skin. But the body is awesome. Good luck with your assignment. :+1:

Very detailed.Pheraps you must correct something in colors but maybe is only my impression…Great work anyway!

I think it’s amasing!

Nice. The last pic is very dramatic. I like the colour scheme you used. I would add more muscle size and definition to it’s thighs and maybe the chest area, so that it will look like it can power it’s wings. Very realistic beak! :+1:

Wow, awesome. Is that the French verZion of Godzilla?

That is a very good model, the only things, in my opinion, that keep from being great, are the comb, and the hangy-down thing (technical term) under his neck, and the specular maps. The comb and the other thing need better placed/thought out details, as it sits right now, they seem a little too randomand maybe a bit too much. The spec maps need to be broken up some, it seems like it has an even amount of specularity across the whole thing.

It is some very impressive modeling, lighting, and texturing. And a great first WIP post. Just a few tweaks, and this thing will be an amazing piece of work.

Cool cock:) I liked details:+1:

Incredibly good scales. As you probably know, basilisk are known for turning their prey to stone, sorta like a medusa. Have you considered doing a shot of your creature among some stone statues of its victims? I think it’d make for a great scene.

Not really a Medusa. There was only one of her.

See, Medusa used to be a beautiful girl, but she was vain, and made the mistake of comparing her beauty to that of Athena (the Godess of Love and War. If you learn nothing else from Greek mythology, learn this: Don’t piss off the Gods!). Athena didn’t like this, so she took away Medusa’s charm and beauty, to such an extreme that even looking directly at her would turn a man to stone. One night, while Medusa was sleeping, the hero Perseus snuck into her cave and, guiding himself by the reflection in his shield, cut off her head. This pleased Athena, so she stuck Medusa’s head on the front of her own shield and wore it proudly into battle.

I like render #3.

Cheers for all the crits!! I will definitely try to improve a lot of the things mentioned. As I said I lost a lot of detail as I cannot get my displacement map from Z brush to displace perfectly in Maya.

mmm, I guess everyone who writes on Greek mythology gives a slightly different opinion. I read that Poseidon slept with Medusa…when she was

beautiful and they produced the Pegasus (winged Horse). Athena then became extremely jealous and turned Medusa into the Ugly woman with hair of snakes who could turn man to stone with her gaze.

They do say that the Basilisk is related to the gorgon…which is another name for Medusa. It seems that all beasts that can turn things to stone with its gaze are related to the gorgon. Including the Basilisk, Medusa and the Catoblepas.

Yes I am planning on doing an Illustration of the basilisk somehow surrounded by stone ornaments of animals that he has turned to stone. Also of two Basilisks fighting, like cock fighting.

Here is the an illustration of the other hybrid character I was talking about. The Hippocampus. From Greek mythology he pulled the chariot of Posideon. Has the head, for-legs of a horse and the tail of a dolphin. He is King of the ocean. He is a good Beast, strong and physically powerful, yet timid and feeble, Gentle. A vegetarian. He Does not provoke fighting but will defend itself if attacked.

Modeled and textured in ZBrush, rendered in Maya and composited in Photoshop.

That’s the beauty of an oral tradition - no end to the diversity!

We’re agreed on the Gorgon, at least – I was struggling to remember that word. If I could think of it, mine would have been a much shorter response.

Very much liking the Hippocampus.

Well done illustration and underwater effect. Cool chicken too.

Is the Pegasus model textured to look like he’s underwater or is that a lighting effect in Maya?

It’s a valid question, but you know the mythology police are going to hunt you down for this. Or the forum police, for not reading the text you replied to:

Anyway… my guess is the “lighting” on him was a seperate render in Maya, using some sort of procedural noise to texture him. Erase from his underside in Photoshop as part of the composite. That’d be the fastest way, I think.

The caustics lighting effect was rendered in Maya. I just attached a caustics texture to the colour attribute of the light. Then rendered lots of passes to do the composit in Photoshop.

Really nice character and render. At first I assumed it was a Kelpie, a water horse, then I read the text. I’d never considered it before but the mythical creatures are oddly similar. Always fun the similarities in mythical creatures. A lot of mythical creatures do have real world origins, most are fairly mundane, so it’s possible they are referring to the same animal or the Greek version came from stories imported from the British Isles.

Great work. Look forward to seeing more.

Very like the Hippocampus.

If I can say it,I’m passionate of mithology too and I always read that the Basilisc is a reptoid beast like a huge snake or a giant lizard-like beast with six legs…
I know the beast that you’ve modelled with the name of Cockatrice.

But we are talking of mitology and there could be many aspects of the same thing.

Technically I’ve already made my crit for the Basilisc-Cockatrice…and regarding yuor underwater scene there’s nothing to say.
Maybe you can give a different illumination with a lighter scene in relation with the good creature…but this is a choose that only you must take.

I’m very impressed by your style and your passion for Epic scenes, passion shared by me too,so I’ll visit your page again very soon…

Waiting for more updates,:+1: :+1: :+1:
