Hi Geert,

A question :
Do you know of a good reference to study how the skeleton moves?
(I believe you’re an anatomy teacher, right?)

You see, I’m trying to figure out exactly what happens when you bend your arm, your legs, your hands, and so on.
I’ve been standing in front of a mirror to study my own skeleton, and although it sheds some light on the matter, it’s a bit of a PITA :D.
(Especially the rotation of the ulna and radius.)

(I hope that the book I’ve ordered at Amazon from Gottfried Bammes, sheds some light on this.
It should arrive today or on monday. “Die Gestalt des Menschen: Lehr- und Handbuch der Künstleranatomie”)

Thanks,
Greetings from Brasschaat.
Dominiek.

Hey Dominiek,

Regarding your question “You see, I’m trying to figure out exactly what happens when you bend your arm, your legs, your hands, and so on”; it describes exactly my biggest problems when studying anatomy… .

Here’s what I did/do to tackle this problem:

First off (before I worked with ZBrush) I polymodeled a skeleton and the muscular system (working from the inside out), I used the following books as ref: Sobotta I and II, the Bammes books and the Taschen book on the human wax models of La Specola (Florence, Italy)(check this out:http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiousexpeditions/sets/72157601024708301/) This gave me a pretty good idea of the muscles and where they attach to the skeleton.

So, next, to grasp what muscles do when joints are bent, I rely on the following combination; bodybuilding magazines (lots of different poses, clearly visible muscles), posing/looking in the mirror  , images in the Bammes books where figures are posed, double checking on the Human Anatomy - Male sculpt (Anatomytools.com).-> when I transpose a character from T-pose to posed, the anatomy gets mangled, but that’s when I tend to resculpt, going really deep into the mesh, sometimes rebuilding it from the skeleton / bony landmarks (helps me keep track of the points where the muscles’s origins and insertions on the skeleton)

I think it’s understandable why Leonardo Da Vinci dug up corpses in the middle of the night… .

Maybe, when “Körperwelten” returns to Kuregem, we should organize a user group meeting … .

Another thing: I recently bought this bookazine from ImagineFX, it’s great, you should pick it up/order it online if you can.

I wish I had better advice to give, but alas, this is how I dabble along  … . Hope this was helpfull somehow, if needed let me know your thoughts/questions!

Hello Geert,

Question : the book of La Specula : is it this book : http://www.amazon.de/Encyclopaedia-Anatomica-Museo-Specola-Florence/dp/3822876135/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1285420323&sr=1-1 ?

Unfortunately the book from ImagineFX seems to not be available anymore. At least I did not find a copy via Google …
( http://community.imaginefx.com/forums/thread/298954.aspx )

As for “Körperwelten” : Last week when I was watching “Ocean’s 13”, you know with Brad Pitt and George Clooney , there was a scene of “Körperwelten” in the movie, and I was thinking exactly what you are thinking, that it would be great to go there.
When it does come to Belgium again, you can count me in for a visit.
Should be fun meeting fellow ZBrushers …

LOL, don’t give me any more ideas !

Dude, Thanks for the info :+1: !
Dominiek.

Absolutely stunning work, been watching this topic for some time now, and you keep amazing me. I can only hope i’ll get my Z work remotely in such a high quality. Truelly inspirational

As for

If i’m not mistaking, this is right now in Rotterdam @ LP II (not too far from belgium right?) I’m also thinking of going there on of these days.

Keep up the great work

Gilbert

wonderful Etch!
I hope some day you can do a DVD for gnomom/digital creator etc.

Great work as usual, Etcher. Thanks for posting the link and book suggestions.

In San Diego I went to the US Körperwelten called “Bodyworlds”. Interesting exhibit, I bought their book… since they didn’t allow cameras.

asecbrush: yep, that’s the one, I bought it relatively cheap at the Boekenvoordeel bookshop.

The waxworx inspired PSTCHOART to make this piece: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showpost.php?p=318987&postcount=1

Too bad you can’t order the ImagineFX book -> it is available on ebay though

About Körperwelten, it runs in Rotterdam now until januari(thanks for the heads up MaddGoat!) 90 min car drive… we’ll see  . When it ran in Belgium, I did read on their website that visitors where allowed to make drawings. between 18.00 and 21.00, can’t find anything about that now though  . We should be able to go equipped with this:

ttyl Dominiek

MaddGoat: hey Gilbert, thanks for the awesome comment man :+1: , also, big thanks for the heads up on Körperwelten… very tempting  will drop u a line when I decide to go :+1: .

yfchild: thanks Yael!!! quote:“I hope some day you can do a DVD for gnomom/digital creator etc.” that would be cool… yeah well, I guess it doesn’t hurt to keep on dreaming, right?

Im: thanks a bunch Larry :sunglasses: , and you’re welcome. Yep, when Körperwelten ran in Belgium, taking pics wasn’t allowed either, but, on some evenings, between 18.00 and 21.00 visitors where allowed to make drawings. Thanks for dropping by - hope all is well for you :+1: .La_Specola.jpg

Thanks Geert :+1:,

Unfortunately, the sale of the ImagineFX copy on EBay has expired.
I came along that link yesterday already.
Too bad …
Will search for it again in a couple of days, maybe a copy will turn up again …

Körperwelten in Rotterdam : that’s not too far.
If you decide to go, just drop us a line like you said :D.

See ya, Dominiek.

Amazing work ! Great anatomy skills:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Asecbrush: Dominiek, I posted this a while back in Ryan’s Z4 thread, but, in case you missed it; see if you can pick up a copy of this month’s 3DWorld issue (#135): Ryan’s article is great -covering a lot of topics- but: the dvd contains a whopping 4 hours of lecture to go with the article (building a good basemesh, basic female anatomy, sculpting complex anatomy; lower arm/shoulder anatomy, cloth, hardsurface…)and two full res character models and the awesome Ecorche Brush.

Digitalmind: thanks man & thanks for dropping me a line :sunglasses: :+1: !3dw.jpg

This thread is getting cold.
We miss you Etcher! drop some inspirational stuff!

eldany: thanks for poking me man  ! These last few weeks I,ve been studying a lot: how to sculpt hair, cloth, etc, developing/finetuning character sculpt/painting/posing MO - but I don’t have enough spare time, so progress is slow. I do spend time on ZBC during my studies to find tips, MO solutions and tons of inspiration  :+1: . I’m looking forward to being able to post some new stuff though… see ya!

Thanks Geert! :+1:

I actually found out about it when I was checking out Sintel.

Hope to see some of your new works soon too!

Happy ZBrushing,
Dominiek.

asecbrush: more than welcome! Pffff, wish I could sculpt more, but as it is now, I’m limited to less than an hour a day  . Gotta’ stay motivated though :rage:
