Error while loadng highDef data

Zbrush gurus, I need your help. Zbrush crashed right when I tried saving the model that I was working on. It gave me that announcment that the command couldn’t not complete due to lack of memory (or something like that). I hit OK and it then tells me that the saving procedure failed. I hit OK again and it crashes. Now, when I reopen Zbrush and try to load the tool it gives me the following error:

INTERNAL ERROR .\Mash3DDXF.cpp Line:11912

Error while loading HighDef data

and obviously the file doesn’t load. So is my file gone or is there a chance to recover it?

Specs:
Intel 6600 (OCd to 3.0Ghz)
2Gb RAM
Radeon 1900xt
around 115GB of free space

Zbrush 3.1 (clean with only alphas and materials added)
Comact Mem - 1.7GB (tried lowering/increasing it but I get the same error)
Max PolyPerMesh - 6 ((tried lowering it/increasing it but I get the same error)

The tool has about 7 or 8 subtools (some with layers) and total polycount is around 10-11mil

It sounds like you were pushing ZBrush a bit farther than was wise, and it ran out of resources when saving the file. Once a file is corrupted, nothing will allow you to load it again.

Changing your settings can prevent this sort of thing from happening again. But it can’t recover the lost file.

Thanks. I feared that. :frowning:

Anyway, what do you suggest I do to prevent it from happening again? If I lower only the compact mem will it be enough or should I also lower the max poly count (I would like to avoid that if possible)? Also, does the number of undo levels matter?

With 2 GB of RAM you should have Compact Mem at about 1700. MaxPolysPerMesh should be no higher than 12. 8 would be preferable. Leave the HD Preview Max Poly setting alone. It doesn’t affect how many polygons your model can have; it simply keeps the editable HD section at a manageable size. Undo’s DO matter. Leave that setting at the default of 4 unless you have a VERY compelling reason to increase it. ZBrush will try to keep more undo’s if possible. It only drops down to this setting when it has to. A setting of 6 (for example) tells ZBrush to keep 6 undo’s available no matter what – even if performance would suffer.

this error also happen in my machine.
so… even if i increase my ram up to 4G, i still can’t load it back…right?

I increase my ram to 4G now.can you give me the setting advice?

thank’s

If you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, Compact Mem should be set to 2000. If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you can set it up to about 3200.

this is my second high def error and second model lost,

i have a media center edition, xp 2002 version hp pavilion
2cpu 6400 @ 2.13ghz
3.0 gigs of ram

what is the optimum settings for Zbrush,

i like to push the poly count on most of my models, and would like to work with more sub tools, is there a good guide line i should be following. i have tried to set the max poly count to the suggested settings for a 2.0 gig set up given earlier in the thread, but at startup it always goes back to 9 million.

any advise would be appreaciated.

thanks in advance.

I know Zbrush isn’t 64bit clean, else these kinds of things wouldn’t be a issue.

Is there a reason why Zbrush doesn’t use PAE modes on intel machines to allocate/manipulate memory pools in excess of 4 gigs? Is there any plan to do this? Or will you just work on making a true 64 bit version?
