Eric Artman's Sculptbook

Similar to many of you, I’ve had a passion for figurative artwork (especially sculpture) ever since I can remember.

Although I've done quite a bit of traditional sculpture and 3D graphics in the past, my first attempts at using ZBrush left me frustrated. I felt like bull in a china shop.

Fortunately, after finding Ryan Kingslien's tutorials here on ZBrushCenral and Gnomonology I finally felt I had the confidence to try my first 100% ZBrush Sculpt.

I'm extremely grateful to Ryan's for approaching his tutorials first and foremost as an artist. Throughout his tutorials he drops gems of artistic and ZBrush knowledge. Now, I feel like I've never had a computer application that's allowed me to be as creative as ZBrush. I strongly recommend any other ZBrush users who feel the way I did to check out Ryan's Gnomonology tutorials. They're pretty inexpensive too.

So, here's my first sculpt done 100% in ZBrush (although the wings were first very roughly box modeled in Maya ). Comments and/or critiques are welcomed. I know parts of this sculpt are unfinished. I developed a few issues with the topology that I'll know to avoid with my next sculpt, so I decided to leave her in this state rather than retopologize her.

                      ![artman_angel_closeup_bronze.jpg|500x375](upload://ArUA5fd65uFeNgr3mEvwHW3wIpa.jpeg)

For future sculpts, I'll probably create the base mesh in Maya or Max. But I love the fact that I know how to create sculptures from scratch now with ZBrush.

Thanks for checking out my work :)

Like the style.definitely looking forward to this thread.:+1:

looks really good,love the hair,nice style:).Thats one wikked first major piece:)with zbrush…

Looks good. Would give her slightly wider hips, but im sure thats just my own personal preference hahaha. Love the way the wings flow. Post more work!

I like it a lot. Agree with DAnconiah. Wider hips will make her look more feminine.

I greatly appreciate the compliments romilkchoprazb, DELTATHUND3R, DAnconia, vlad74 :).

I totally see what you mean about her narrow hips DAnconia and vlad74. I think wider hips would definitely help make her look more feminine. I’m so impressed with the ability of this community to focus right in on any issues a sculpt may have. ZBrushCentral is such an amazing resource.

Luckily, with ZBrush a little hip widening will be easy.

Gave me the first smile of the day…thank you

If you are going to go more feminine, i agree she needs wider hips, maybe a smaller waist. The only parts lacking in detail a bit are her upper legs in the middle, maybe a hint of a sartorius muscle as well as a sharper iliac crest would do good. I have a question about the pose though, looks like she is about to breathe out, what’s your inspiration behind a pose like this: an angel breathing on something?

Thanks ministerart, I’m glad she brought a smile to your face. I see you’ve created some winged beauties yourself

Thanks for the comments aiman. Her upper legs could use more detail.

You’re correct about this angel’s gesture too. She has just taken a deep breath. I envisioned her as having being blown back or surprised by some force. It’s as if she was thrown up in the air and has now reached the apex of the blow and is now recoiling. I also wanted this gesture to be rather subtle.

thats fantastic, her wings are incredible!! well done Rodin, looking forward to more from you.

Thanks for the compliments mradamw, they’re much appreciated.

The process of creating the wings was the most fun and creative part of this angel for me.

I merged a few wing styles from some of the classical sculptors I could find on the web. Then I just had fun with it.

Below is a picture of the base mesh that I used for the wings. It’s the only part of the angel that was created outside of ZBrush -

I agree with DAnconia about the hips, other than that fantastic work:+1:

Can you post a side view? bringing in the bottom of the ribs a bit could emphasize the width of the hips. They could be widened a lot. Not just for my own personal satisfaction but also to give more of a maternal feel. Which i always think of with female angels.

Sure thing DAnconia, here’s a side view. Please keep in mind that I’ve sadly neglected to give her gluteus maximus the attention it deserves  .

Maternal feel eh? Yea, I see what you’re getting at. You want me to give her larger breast  .

I’m very pleased to have just finished completely redesigning my website/online portfolio.

What relevance does this have to ZBrushCentral.com you ask? Well, for a while I've enjoyed creating immersive website designs for myself and others using 3D applications, but I've never had more of a blast than when doing it with ZBrush. I was able to quickly try out all sorts of colors and textures and materials. I've uploaded a few screenshots of the site below. I've also documented some of the work that went into creating this site under the Visual Effects section @ [www.EricArtman.com](http://www.EricArtman.com) Questions, comments and critiques are welcome as usual :). ![final_home_page_970.jpg|960x734](upload://kbAAi9Zj8xSy6C7N8Vo3vf52Mo.jpeg)

Nice site. Needs a next button when viewing the photos and images so you dont have to keep backing out and going to another section.

Then again, i feel pretty lazy right now

That is an excellent suggestion DAnconia. I agree that many people who visit internet forums are used to having optimal navigability (that actually is a word :)).

Rather then just adding a couple of buttons or text links, I’m going to whip up something special.

Thanks for checking out my site.

Excellent site Eric…

Is that “lord Foul” as in Thomas Covenant?

Now you’ve made me smile. Yes, that Lord Foul

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who has read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, much less heard of them. That’s so fantastic that you spotted Lord Foul on my site.

From what I’ve read on the net, it looks like a Chronicles of Thomas Covenant movie was released in 2006. I wonder if it was any good? I can’t find it on netflix.

I would like to see Peter Jackson direct a movie based on one of the Thomas Covenant novels. Of course, he’d be welcome to use my sculpture as the basis for Lord Foul in the movie

I first tried reading Stephen R. Donaldson’s books in early adolescence. I dug the cover art on the book, but the subject matter was way over my head  . Later, I read through the whole series when I was in my late teens. I suppose the story of the outcast struck much more of a cord with me at that time in my life.

Thanks for the compliments and thanks for spotting Lord Foul.

we should try sculpting a whole “covenant” beastiary…everything from urviles through to Giants. You up for it?
