Elfquest Sculpting Odyssee

Elarcano: seems like you’re a Furry Vest-Fan too! Thanks, I agree, and I include the current status of Cutter’s body. I moved the arms in a little, seemed more natural. There are still many faults, but most important are chest and arms, as they will be visible (no clothing). Any views you might have are most welcome, buddy! :+1:

Marsyas: thanks! You know, I never even thought about the fur material…

Nightwoodwolf: thanks! And what an appropriate name for this thread; Cutter’s had wolfblood in his veins! Yeah, I’ve spent many hours on this project already, but it hasn’t been boring so far.

Bimm: thanks for the pat on the back, it helps! I must say I’m looking forward to the finished piece too. If only that Plakkie guy would hurry up…

fullbody.jpg

to make the fest i also discovered a diverent way of doing it.
instead of masking bits and than snake hooking…
i made a alpha with alot of noise on it…now you can skip the masking and go straight to snakehooking ;)…i’m making a all fur animal at the moment

Yep, that’s another clever way of doing it Strict! There was a reason why I did it my way, though I can’t remember why. Can you share the alpha with us? :+1:

hehehe … i am glad you are not bored …

well the way i work is in posing a character is to select an arm ( for instance ) in high res level then go down couple of levels ( depends on the details ) then repose.

i found placing the transpose circles in the right position really avoids the stretching, good modeling Plakkie and everything looks great ,but i think you need to lower the shoulders a bit tho and i would pay more attention to the torso around the chest and down a bit, abs looks fine but hey, that just me

good luck :+1:

won’t share my aplha just yet…i only pre furred my model to see if it looks any good…still have to do alot of basic detailing first(so on the overal it’s not fully tested yet)…i coloured it as well to see what it would look like and deleted that 2…I have to learn how to be patient
but i did figure that i want to go with a less furry aproach…my model turned from nice and fuzzy to wild beast…so i’m still tweaking it.
plakster i can send you the aplha if you want to test it…but like i said…it’s not fully tested by me yet (not that it means much cus i’m still a newby)

You take your time to perfect it Strict.
Now I remember why I didn’t use alpha on snakehook:
When I used an alpha-brush I could only make the stroke once. If I wanted to ‘comb’ the hairs in a different direction I could never get the brush on exactly the same spot. By using a ‘hair-mask’ and a no-alpha brush I can always get acces to the same hairs as on the first stroke.
Does this make sense? How do you cope with later on changes Strict?

You got a good character coming along here Plakkie. :+1: :+1:  :+1:

Its intresting how you went about creating the fur vest, I’ve been working on a fur coat and came up with more or less the same progress. I used the spray brush to creat a mask, used the size option in deformation to creat the strands then brushed them down using the Nudge tool.

I found working from the bottom upwards help the fur to lay over itself. ithen went in and used the snake hook to refine areas. The results i would say where reasonable, but not quite to the standared I hoped for. But with a bit practice and tweaking I think it could produce some convinsing effects.

Thanks panstar! Interesting twist to the masking approach. Gonna try that one too! :+1:

i’m not trying to hijack your thread…but i figure a pic speak louder than words.
with the alpha you can also paint different hi-lights in the fur…if your polypainting of course(this one i did in 10 seconds…it’s just a example)…i will also pm you the alpha to play with

Nice Plakkie! But i got impressed and i must make a (VERY) nobbie question to you:
:o
How did you extrude the elf body?I mean ,you made the chest and then you made the arm and so on…
Are you using zspheres or another 3d app. :qu:
Or you got a miraculous way to extrude in ZB :qu:

keep it up ,it’s getting really good man (i really like cartoon-based modeling…).

Hi there! Thanks for the kind words, and as for your not so nooby question:
Alas… Zbrush does not grow or extrude limbs for you. (would be great) I was so stupid to start with a head object only and made a body object later. Right now I’m having a real hard time getting a good merging of the two.
During multiple posts of this thread you see different objects (some with no arms, some with) and some with hidden limbs, maybe that gave the idea that I could extrude.
So: It’s only Zbrush, and started with ZSpheres, but no miraculous technique so far. Stick around; I’ll finish it eventually.

Stick around; I’ll finish it eventually.

Haven’t left my seat
Say… do you have a full body image of cutter? One from the comic’s… that way I could “know” what to point out on your model

Times ticking buddy

-Gulp- thanks for prodding me buddy. :o

Indeed, progress is slow. I’m wrestling with technical problems, trying to learn bits of the program to reach my goal. Today it feels I’ll never get there, but that’s just a fase. No excuse for not showing any updates ofcourse. I’m hoping to present a refined version of his pants in a few hours, so stay tuned.

I’ve included the rare fullbody pictures I could find in my comics. Can you see something from them? :+1: I’ve also included the pose-picture I’m planning to recreate in the end.

Finally the pants are starting to look like something!

[clothing3.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘71719’,‘clothing3.jpg’,1,0))

Had a real rush with this. Basic pants shape done by extracting a mask from the legs, used the stitch brush with my custom made alpha, tried to sculpt some folds in the leather, but I have to train myself some more in that area. I twisted and deformed a basic ring mesh to get a rope, and draped that around his hips. I drew the basic loin cloth shape on a basic plane and extracted it. That way you get instant thickness and nice rounded edges. Draped them around his hips again (some more work required yet), et voilá. On the front of the loin cloth there is what I think a peacock feather in the drawings. I’ve no clue how I’m going to make one, but no doubt with Zbrush’s help I will get it done somehow.

Brimming with confindence again,
Plakkie

I think you did a very nice stich work on it! Very good!

Hey Buddy :+1:

The pants look fantastic man!
My only observation would be that from the image of the pants from post Post#114 it seems that from the knee down it’s a bit more baggy and saggy (less tight to the leg)

Not sure, but maybe it would be easier to make the folds first and then add the stiches

Cool to see the progress, keep them coming :+1:

Wow, i remeber that character, which is strange since i never got into comics… O.o

But that’s a pretty ingenious way of doing fur! i have been brooding over different throughts of doing fur since my Sheal will need lots of it.

But wha tyou got is looking really good :+1:

Thanks Forlocks! It’s quite an easy technique. I’m currently working on a more accurate vest, and I’m brooding on how to make a peacock feather (many failed attempts), so stay tuned…

i did a few trials as well, cus i was curious.
anyway…make a cube(high poly) and get a peacock texture.
use auv tiling for texture methode…turn the cube around to see where the eye ended up.
mask the eye and extract…0.002 or something.
use the texture on the new object…the eye should be in the same spot.
now hit the texture to colour button…presto 1 peacock eye ready to be tweaked for a bit of shape…looked pretty good to me…wouldn’t detail it to much.

Nice idea Strict! I’ll have to find a good frontal peacock texture, but if I do I’ll try it tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :+1: :+1:
