Edge Loops and Low-poly/Base mesh modeling

I wanted to point out some great tutorials by an artist named Jonathan Williamson. If you’re like me and have trouble grasping the notion of “animation ready” meshes and low-poly mesh modeling, and don’t quite understand the importance and application of Edge Loops, then these tutorials should bring that misunderstanding to an end.

The artist uses Blender 3D in these tutorials, but these techniques can be used in any modelling application.

You will need a bit torrent client to download the free tutorials.

i’ve spotted some problem in the female face tutorial here is the image [vlcsnap-178854.jpg]
i think that the major problem is about the chin flow, as you can see in the best render image. i don’t want to criticise the work of this man (that has done a good job sharing his knowledge), i just want to talk about edge flow error with some of you.

In addition to pointing out what’s wrong, could you also add what your solution would be? I’m not dissagreeing with you here, but I just want to see what you think would be better topology.

Hi,
Thanks for the link, downloading it now…

hi, here is a model of mine where you can see what i was talking about: the chin area is better underlined and the flow permits a good deformation, also the nose-labial line is cleaner. About the area between the eyebrows i’ve tried this structure to corrugate them better. here comes the “but” part…but i’m not sure about the frontal and mandible areas. the target output is a realtime engine featuring normal maps, so maybe this is just a shallow question but if you got any suggestion i will appreciate that.

About the topic of this thread the tutorial don’t talk about edgeloop modeling as the author says at the beginning. i’ve found another one that talks about current generation modeling workflow, similar to the one used by ian joyner in the gnomon dvd for those of you that haven’t see it you can find it here http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ in the azureus community. It’s all free and if you don’t know polyboost you must to see it…ok he uses the “other” program but who cares when you got zbrush.
(i think that someone will says something about all this ads  )
