Edge Loop Artifacts

Hi guys. This is my first attempting of modeling in zbrush and i’m having some troubles.

I want to create a edgeloop to build a mouth in my character, but when i divide the topology in a higher resolution, something goes wrong… What can it be?

Thank you

your subdividing levels After doing the edgeloops or before? maybe is that your subD before. i guess or maybe are something masking

i’ve run into this as well, this is not how it used to work in 3.5r2.
What i believe you need to do now is use the “Freeze Transformation” button in the geometry pallet at the level you wish to do the edge loop.

You were right spaceboy…:+1: Thank you so much!

Thanks SpaceBoy this was very very helpful!!

Actually the problem now is that when I Freeze Transformations and add the Edge Loop I loose the sculpted data that I already had on my model. If I try to get the detail back by unfreezing I get the artifacts from the new Edge Loops I added. Any advice on this?

@roy i don’t know, but for myself i’m just sticking to using 3.5r and jumping into 4r2 when absolutely necessary, then back again.

You also have to hit the Equalize Surface Button after you freeze transforms but before you bring the objects back on screen. I explain this in more detail here. http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?163649-Extrusion-Artifacts&p=910086#post910086

I’m still having this problem, and I don’t understand the explanation here. Could someone tell me step-by-step what I need to do to make an edge loop that doesn’t produce weird spikes at higher subdivision levels?

Heck, sometimes when I try to make an edge loop, I get weird spikes at the current subdivision level, as if the polygons are stretching out to the center of the model. I’m quite sure I’ve hidden everything but the few polys I wish to edge loop.

Also, is there a minimum or max number of polys one should try to edge loop? Should the polys in question be symmetrical? What limits are there on what you can and can’t edge loop? The documentation of Zbrush, always spare, is particularly unhelpful on all this.

Also, what’s the “freeze transform” button? Do you mean the “freeze subdivision level” button? That seems to eliminate all subdivisions from the mesh! Do I have to do that every time I want to make an edge loop??

Thank you in advance.
