Earlier masking fades as new masking is painted?

This is bizarre, nothing has changed in my brush or other setting while painting the mask. After painting the mask for perhaps 10 minutes, I find that earlier masking has faded. I’m using a wacom tablet, but have tried it with a mouse, and I get the same effect. It does not appear to be related to stopping (releasing the CTRL key and L - mouse button, or picking up the pen) and starting again.

Does anyone know why my mask masking would fade over time?

In a situation like this, it’s always a good idea to post an image of the problem. A picture is worth a thousand words. What exactly do you mean by fading? Do you mean the mask is being smoothed or losing it’s intensity? If it’s being smoothed, then it’s because you are Ctrl+clicking on the mask which is how you smooth it. As you have to hold down Ctrl to mask, it’s very easy to do. Your stroke has to be over a certain duration before it won’t smooth. I believe this duration can be set in Preferences > Interface > Click Time. This has also frustrated me on occasion. Sometimes I could Ctrl+Z out of it, other times, I didn’t have enough Undo’s and had to start over again.

Actually it is losing intensity and being smoothed, see masks below

Depending on the resolution of the mesh that you are painting on and in conjunction with how small your mask strokes are, then what I stated in the other post might be your problem. You are probably inadvertently smoothing the mask. I have never had a problem with the mask losing intensity as I was painting it.

Hi Zber2,

I’ll look at this to see if thats the problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

Chris

Zber2,

that is the problem. Setting the transpose prefs masking blur to 0 solves the problem. I’ll just have to remember to reset it if I ever need the blur masking function in the future.

Thanks alot!

No problem Chris! Glad you got it sorted. Cheers!
