Dynamesh is nice and all, and maybe it’s just me, but I run into areas of the mesh that look awful. Where 5 polygons come together, usually where triangles meet that create bumps/pinching on the surface of the mesh. No matter what I do they do not smooth out. Is this something I am doing wrong or this inherit in Dynamesh topology?
Some poles (what you are referring to) are unavoidable in the auto topology process (unavoidable in any topology process really, but humans can make better decisions about where to put them) . Zbrush doesnt like them, as they dont tend to smooth well with the default smooth tool, and can be problematic if they appear in a prominent location. Some people have tricks in Zbrush for dealing with them. If You experiment, Im sure you can find some effective treatments.
But it shouldn’t trouble you in the long run. Dynamesh is for quickly establishing form in low to medium resolution meshes. You’re not typically worried about fine detail when using it. Once your form is established at those levels, people typically increase the resolution of the mesh to work on finer detail, at which point that bit of geometry likely no longer exists, or will no longer be an issue with the higher resolution. Also, as you remesh and make changes to your dynamesh object, the geometry changes, so on the next remesh, it may not even be there any longer.
You can also change the resolution slightly on your next remesh, which will distribute the geometry differently if it really bothers you. Once you establish your form, you could also retopo the mesh with more deliberately created geometry . If you are planning to use the model outside of Zbrush, you will be retoplogizing at some point regardless.
The point is, it’s really only a temporary inconvenience.
The smooth brush has two modes. To use the standard smooth mode, simply press and hold the SHIFT key while smoothing. The 2nd smooth mode is a ‘smart’ mode which is able to easily smooth extra ordinary points. This mode is engage when you let go of the SHIFT key while the mouse/tablet button is still pressed.
Try this ‘smart smooth’ mode and if you still encounter any difficulties, please include a complete screenshot of the ZBrush window with the mesh that you are having difficulties with.
Thanks Spyndel:)
thanks. Actually, that geometry becomes worse at the higher resolution, not better. I will try the other smooth brush. Was not aware of the 2nd mode. Thanks.
