dynamesh resolution very low

So I’ve been working on this character for a while now and I’ve been using dynamesh throughout with great results. Today, however, I set up a new subtool for the belt, and now Dynamesh reduces the mesh to 200 polys(the original mesh is 700 polys). I’ve set the dynamesh resolution up all the way, but still get the same result. This is not a size issue because I’ve been building smaller dynameshes on the character and haven’t had this problem at all. Seems like suddenly zbrush has determined that my mesh resolution shouldn’t be as high. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

EDIT: here’s something else I just noticed. No matter what I change the dynamesh resolution to, it gives me the same result. It could be 64 or 1024, I get the exact same mesh resolution.

When your changing DynaMesh resolution, I found that you usually have to sculpt a bit before you re-mesh. For example, change resolution, use a smooth brush to smooth a bit then Ctrl+click +drag. That has always been that way for some reason.

That’s what I thought at first too, but that’s not the problem. I start sculpting, click-drag at 1024 res. start sculpting, click-drag at 16 res. same result. It almost seems like the resolution slider is completely broken.

Does it do it even after you Unify the mesh?

Try scaling up your mesh. Apparently size is very important for resolution with dynamesh.

Unify does not fix the resolution slider. It does make the resolution go a little higher, but it stays the same no matter what I’ve set the resolution slider on.

Have you tried saving out just the tool, and then reloading zbrush?

Tried that too, doesn’t work. Seems like something, I don’t know what, is breaking the dynamesh tool every once in a while. The initial problem that I was having with dynamesh got resolved randomly for no reason. But now I’m having the same problem with a different subtool.

I try dividing the mesh, changing resolution, export/import, nothing seems to work. I even tried home zbrush vs work to see if it’s a zbrush installation problem. Same thing.
