Dynamesh problem

Im still starting out in Zbrush, and I have a quick question about Dynamesh. Ive done the detailing on my models body but I have left the head. I am now moving onto the head but I would like to dynamesh the head to extract the mouth/ears/eyes etc without stretching polygons. When I click dynamesh it makes a really low resolution version of my model without remeshing the polygons. Even if i change the resolution setting in dynamesh it will always produce the same mesh. (I should also note that the dynamesh button has not been highlighted or enabled when I click it, it just asks if if id like to freeze subdivisions) What am I doing wrong here?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Heres a pic of what I mean.

Two options here:

  • click no when it asks if you want to freeze your subdivisions. This will dynamesh the model like you expect
  • If you do click yes, it will freeze the subdivisions, which will drop you down to the lowest subdivision level (which is what you see here). The point of this is to let you make any changes to the mesh, and then when you unfreeze it, it will attempt to project the subdivision history back onto the new mesh. So if you did click yes and it freezes them like in your screenshot, then you can dynamesh it and unfreeze when you’re done. You probably don’t want to do this option though

And ultimately, as a general tip, you might find it better to try and finish the need to dynamesh before you start going heavy with the details.

Thanks for the advice, its all fixed now, for some reason it only worked after I deleted all my lower subDs

Deleting your lower subdivisions means there are no subdivision levels left to freeze, which means there is no need to prompt the user if they want to freeze, which means its the same as clicking ‘no’ if and when it asks if you want to freeze them.
