dynamesh not closing holes

I am watching a sort of old tutorial (not sure of the ZB version being used). I am using ZB 4r7p3.
In creating vertebrae of a spine there is a long solid piece of geometry (the spine) with 24 polygroups (the vertebrae).
The teacher uses dynamesh with groups turned on, no polish, no project, no blur. After the dynamesh he has 24 complete vertebrae with closed geometry all around. I however do not. The tops and bottom where the groups touched are open holes.

I did a quick search and something saying something about a “close holes” slider in the dynamesh sub palette but I do not see this. During the dynamesh ZB’s status line says it is closing holes but it is not.

Any ideas about what I am missing or doing wrong?

Thanks you,
Paul

So I found the close holes sliders in the preferences palette. Mine was set to 4. I tried with 1,2 & 3. I tried with a simple poly sphere. No luck still. Holes don’t close.

OK I found the problem, Autogroup. I didn’t realize ZB was making separate groups of the hole’s caps so when I used rectangle select to isolate a vertebrae it was hiding the caps. I hit autogroup after dynameshing and can see the holes are indeed closed. Maybe creating separate groups of the caps is a somewhat new feature, newer than the ZB version being used in the tutorial at least.

Cheers
