Dynamesh Insert Mesh Brush Subtract Question

When I am using the insert mesh brush, holding ALT does not create a “negative” mesh - is there something special to have it subtract rather than add?

Thanks for any advice

Holding alt while using insert creates a negative mesh, that will be subtracted during the dynamesh remeshing process.

Can you provide more detail about what you’re doing, and the results you’re getting?

Using ‘Alt’ is correct, but like Spyndel say’s, you won’t see the result until you remesh. Hold down ‘Ctrl’ and ‘click+drag’ twice on the canvas.

Thanks Spyndel - I must be doing something wrong - now it is crashing sometimes…

Start ZBrush.
Use Lighbox add a Dynamesh064
Switch to InsertSphere brush
Draw out sphere while holding alt
ctl-click drag to remove from base mesh
<Sometimes this causes zbrush to crash here>
other times it adds the sphere as a separate mesh (turn on polyframe to see)
ctl-click drag a second time and the sphere is removed
<Sometimes this causes zbrush to crash here>

sometimes it works
I am on an iMac running Lion with 16GB ram

Perhaps there is something problematic with that file (Dynamesh064). Wouldnt be the first time one of the bundled assets had some quirks associated with it.

Do this:

  1. Select default zbrush shere primitive. Draw out, and in edit mode, make polymesh 3d.

  2. Select insert sphere brush. Hold down Alt, and draw into surface.

  3. Ctrl drag in empty canvas to clear mask, or press shift+ctrl+A

  4. Press the dynamesh button.

Once you see how it works, you should be ok from there. If for some reason it doesnt, let us know.

Thanks Spyndel -

Works fine starting with a tool - same thing crashes to the desktop almost all the time if you start with DynaMesh064…

If you click Make Polymesh3d as soon as opening DynaMesh064, then click dynamesh after using InsertSphere it works too…

So… I guess the default DynaMesh064 is not a polymesh3d or something? In any event, it works great if you click Make Polymesh3d first.

Thanks again for your help
I am really enjoying this release - Dynamesh is great - two thumbs up
