Dynamesh Going Back Subdiv Level

I’ve created a character using Dynamesh with a resolution of 400. I re-dynameshed it with a resolution of 60 which caused the model to lose details. Is there anyway I can go back to a higher subdivision level of Dynamesh and bring back my details? Is there anyway I can go back and forth between low and high resolution within Dynamesh?

it sounds like you want to be using regular subD levels and not dynamesh.

duplicate your mesh at your 400 dynamesh res.
use Zremesher to lower your polygon count.
subD your mesh up to a level that support your previous details
project your new mesh onto your old mesh.

hope that helps.

Aww man, I was hoping I don’t have to use Projection…I am really not a fan of that because I always get spikes around the eye area and have to resculpt a lot of details. And for baking out normal maps and displacement maps for low poly character, I just use XNormal. No projection.

That one is understandable, but unfortunately its a necessity if you accidentally cleared away your details by using dynamesh with a low resolution. Dynamesh isn’t like subdivision levels where the base topology is preserved (allowing you to step up and down easily enough). Instead its a tool that completely retopologizes the mesh with brand new vertices/edgeflow, so what you end up with (a similar looking form) is pretty much all that survives the process.

For now Beta’s advice is the only way to get that old detail back (and even then that will only work if you still have the older res400 sculpt saved somewhere). In the future, it would be better to focus on using dynamesh solely to form the major shapes of the character without worry about the details. Once you have that you can either turn dynamesh off and subdivide like normal, or use zremesher on it for an even easier-to-work-with base.
