Hi guys,

i’ve been long time lurker here and finally took the courage to start a sketchbook thread…

here is something i’ve just made - i am right now in the middle of studying the upper body, so i deleted the lower part for now

[archer1.jpg

base mesh is ‘super average man’ from the zbrush directory.

looking forward to all your critiques, be honest because i want to improve

thanks in advance and have a nice day,
andrew

nice, but you should do the head of this character a bit lower, now it’s just looking as children proportion.

Hi Rodion,

thanks a lot for the critique - i’ve always had problems with the proportions of my models and i didn’t realize this one is off proportion too

talking about proportion, i have this old model that i worked on and i wanted to ask to you guys whether the proportion is correct or still wrong

00fix.jpg

credit: the model is done from following Zack Petroc’s ‘The Form of Anatomy’ 2-parts video tutorials

looking forward to your critiques. Thanks in advance

cheers,
andrew

He looks like he’s going to fall forward. His nose seems a bit too wide as well, but its hard to tell from the shot. Otherwise good work so far, really like seeing head-length lines.

dunno if I completely agree with regard to the size of the head, but there is something odd on the 3qrt shot…maybe its a bit too wide.

IMO I’m not feeling the tension in the pose

the way the shoulders are tilting down to the left means that the elbow must bend to raise the bow, which anatomically you got right but it lacks strength… I imagine the arm would be dead straight, and the shoulders would be inline.

if this pose is after the release of the arrow maybe you need to re-think the composition of the pose.

in the shot from the back, it looks like his neck might be a bit too far to the right…

its looking good :+1:

Hi Womball,

you’re right he is leaning way too forward -

I’ve fixed it and added the rest of the leg muscles

zp_ecorche.jpg

Hi Morph Division,

thanks for the critiques, you’ve made a lot of good points especially the shot from the back, he is too far to the right and i noticed his left trapezius is too much

regarding tension and stuffs, to be honest i didn’t think of these when i was sculpting - i guess i haven’t reached that level yet

again thanks guys for the critiques so far - very much appreciated and please share more thoughts as i post more studies

cheers,
andrew

Hi guys,

i would like to start a new study so i thought i’d post just a transposed base mesh so i get the basic right and go from there - i hope you guys don’t mind, i’d really like to improve my skills and so far NONE of my stuffs has ever have the nice feeling of weight

[Untitled-4.jpg]

do you think this is correct yet? in terms of weight, center of gravity, proportion, contrapposto… or others that i can’t think of

i really hope you pros are willing to help an unskilled noob

many thanks in advance and looking forward to learning from you guys

Cheers,
andrew

I think his shins might be too short. Though you made him 9 heads high which is hugely tall for a human and might just be throwing my perception off a little.

David is an awfull idea for proportions, you shouldn’t use it dude

Hi KillahPriest,

thanks for the critique regarding the shin, i will keep it in mind when doing the adjustment.

Oh the model is actually not 9 heads…

it is actually 8 heads (where the jawline starts is the 8th division),

so he is around 7 1/2-ish… sorry if it’s not clear,

but i guess making the shin bone larger will account for a good 8 heads

Hi joebount,

oh wow you can tell just by the hip tilt that i was referring to David

actually i didn’t plan to use David, but when i googled for ‘contrapposto’, it is one of a few that i liked and used to refer

but yeahh it is based very loosely

Keep the critiques coming guys,
really appreciate it so far

thanks,
andrew

Okay here’s the update

[Untitled-4fix.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘180751’,‘Untitled-4fix.jpg’,1,0))

a friend mentioned that the right leg should rotate more towards the center and from the side view it was really wrong and so those are fixed

regarding the shin bones length, i have it fixed but only on the left leg (the bent one) - for some reason i was making the legs to 8 heads long but looks awkward so i decided to keep it 7 1/2

btw i came across this nice article about contrapposto and ‘rythm’ -

http://figdrawing.blogspot.com/2008/10/standing-pose-rhythm-and-contrapposto.html

ok definitely some areas needed more/less volume and adjusting etc2,

if you guys have more crits please it’s more than welcome. i’m gonna start sculpting

thanks,
andrew

Nice job so far on the last figure pose…and great little tut in that link you posted…:+1:
On your figure with the bow,…maybe make the bow longer. The bow would have to be longer in order for the bow string to be pulled back all the way without snapping the bow in the fireing position he is in now…The distance from his fingers that hold the feathered end of the arrow to the hand that is holding the bow, should be relative to the lenght of the bow, and it’s bending capabilities …Just a minor suggestion and observation that caught my eye right away when I saw him in the act of shooting an arrow.
Looking forward to seeing the progress on both of these pieces…:+1:

Hi SpiritDreamer,

thanks for the critiques on the bow, i will keep it in mind when i do bows and such

anyways, here is the contrapposto study

contrapposto1.jpg

please let me know if anything is wrong

thanks and have a nice day,
andrew

This is looking like a nice sculpt. I suggest looking at your muscle groups around the scapulae. It looks like you might be missing the Rhomboid.

Hi fluxist8070,

thanks for the critique - sorry i guess i missed it, i will keep in mind and work from reference better next time

meanwhile, i’m starting a new study ~

i would like some opinion whether you guys like the first pose (the one where the left arm is on the knee) or the second pose with the arms open?

Untitled-12.jpg

the fingers sorry i haven’t finished transposing them - the left hand will be a fist and the right arm will be extended touching the floor.

Also if you have any pointers regarding proportion, angle or whatever - please feel free to correct me

thanks in advance,
andrew

I like the pose very cool looking!

Very cool so far…the toes may need a bit of adjusting…

Hi SolidSnakexxx,
thank you for your kind words

Hello d100763,
thanks for the pointers - you’re right i didnt sculpt the toes coz there were too many of em and i got lazy - sorry ^^

anyhoo,
i’m in the middle of doing a project which if good enough will be printed haha

here’s what i have up to this point, just past the initial transposing.
some volumes are lost during the process and the they’re both only at level 4 division or something

duo01.jpg

but if you have any comments and suggestions please dont hesitate to share so i can improve it
i wanna try my very best to for this piece

thx,
andrew
