DragRect dead center on grid with alpha?

Hi all,

I want to take an alpha I have of a stone wall and apply it to a grid and have it deformed based on the grey values of the stones. This works fine if I use dragrect but I can’t get it to be perfectly center as I need this to be tiling. If I click Crop and Fill that works too but then I lose my ability to “edit” the model then do some extra sculpting.

any help is appreciated!

thx

There are a few different things you could try.

You could try using the alpha as a mask (Rect Stroke, with Square + Center) enabled. By holding space you can adjust the position, and then afterwards inflate the result.

You could try using projection master and the drag-rect stroke. This will let you edit the stroke using the move/rotate/scale buttons in order to fine-tune the result before accepting it and picking the tool back up. This would also work both with masking+inflate, or normal brush deformation.

Or you could go the texture route. Basically line the alpha up to be centered and seamless in Photoshop, and apply it as either a displacement map, surface noise, or a normal texture that drives a mask’s intensity.

cool thanks for the help!
