hmmm, i remember upham having done a very nice ZBrush Moa and explaining how he did the feathers back at ZAcademy… i could not find it in the ZAcademy compilation and i can’t remember what he tought us :frowning: perhaps he’s finding some time to explain once more…

You made me chuckle Pigdish  You don’t perhaps hang your hat in Norrath? I hear the swamp is lovely this time of year but those pesky Frogluks have been overunning the place

Hi dom,
One way is this:

This was made by:

  1. Selecting the Flat Color material
  2. Making a Sphere3D
  3. Setting the Draw Size very small and SnakeHooking the center of my feather out
  4. Selecting a medium Draw Size and selecting the FiberBrush. The Grooming I set to full. Finaly, I Fibered the SnakeHook, starting at the Sphere end.
This method works fine for one feather, however many feathers could be diffucult.

To take Muvlo’s example (which btw is beautiful  ) and expand it into making lots of feathers, I’m confident this’ll work:

  1. Create the feather as Muvlo suggests.

  2. Grab it with the MRGBZ Grabber (with Auto Crop modifier pressed)

  3. Select the Depth Brush (the one with the 3D in the icon)

  4. Select the feather from the Texture palette and press Transparent (to make the black background disappear)

  5. Select a Drag Rect stroke and Brush00 alpha and start brushing.

Let me know if this does the trick, maybe post your results. Good luck and happy ZBrushing!

'Afternoon all . . . Just a quick note to add to this thread - Following all the previous suggestions & using the “Depth 3D Brush” allows you the function of being able to ( Rotate, Scale & Move ) each feather after you have applied it to the canvas, just like any 3D Object.

See’ya a little later . . . Mark.

Found this on hardrive number 5 by Mr. Upham earlier. Hope it helps

Oh lord, that is sooo old!! I’ve been meaning to update that tut, (thats why I didn’t put it in the ZAcademy-Compile).

What I was planning on doing is combining the knowledge learnt from Pixolators recent thread on 3d-felt collage effect so there is lots of coloured “plates” over the object, and then “rake” the plates with the blur-brush and a fine-dotty alpha, so they represent the fine feather-fibers.
I’ll knock a proper tutorial up this weekend.
Till then …
Upham.
PS. Wish this forum had a spell-checker option.

I’m glad I made you chuckle.

Me used ta call Grobb home but me move away cuz me no kin eber git passed all dem frogloks in Guk. Me lookin fer new home now.

Who did you wander as in Norrath?
