Document Resize Crashes ZB 3.12 when using Eric Keller's Intro to ZB

I have recently purchased the Eric Keller book ‘Introducing ZBrush’ to help me teach some basics to my grandson.
In the part relating to the underwater scene it asks the reader to resize the Document to 3096 x 1742. After doing this I use the zoom button to allow the document to fit the window and ZBrush crashes every time.
I am using a Mac Pro 2.66 dual Xeon with 5 Gb of ram and OS X 10.5.6

I have tried other close sizes and some work but others similarly crash Zbrush.
I am sorry if this has already been reported but I have spent some time searching but cannot find any likewise crash reports

I’m not sure about this, but I think I read somewhere that any size other than the default size (and multiplications thereof) cause ZBrush 3.12 to crash when zooming and rendering. It sounds like a bug. The only way I’ve found to get around the zooming bug is to simply zoom little by little, incrementally, keeping the arrow inside the zoom box.

I’ve run into a similar problem and have a scene that I can’t render at all (it crashes right before the render finishes), I think this is because I made it something other than regular size. However, when I resize the file and try to render it at a ‘regular’ size, ZBrush crashes as soon as I hit ‘Best’. So, I may have to trash my work and start over again, because it’s a mixture of 2.5d and 3D sculpting, therefore not easy to assemble again.

Sorry that this reply is not much help, but maybe somebody else knows a way around this problem.

Thanks MotleyPete,
Well at least I now know it is not just my set up that is going tits up on this.
So frustrating when your not knowing when its going to strike. Seems a bit of a gamble whether a piece can get to 100% without loosing it.
I am hoping that Aurick may contribute something that tells us it’s being worked on.
Oh well !!! just keep zbrushing I guess

Thanks again for your input

It’s a known issue with 3.12. It is best to use the default Document size, or scale up by pressing the ‘Double’ button.

I think you’ll be OK as long as you keep proportions locked.

(Though I’ve given up on the Mac version–I’m only running ZB in Vista due to the incompetent/buggy delivery of 3.12 combined with the lack of remediation by Pixologic.)

Thanks guys all noted.
I have been away from Zbrush since the new release so I haven’t spent any time with it yet.
It’s not like Pixologic to release new versions with bugs and from what I have looked over there are a few which should have been resolved by now.

Anyways I guess there is a work around for this one but my little student here cannot open the scene files that come with the book as they crash as soon as he zooms them. All is not however lost as he does get better experience creating the scenes himself.

From what I have read the Book by Eric is first class for anyone new to Zbrush. So thanks for that Eric.

Marcus … Does Pix intend to update 3.12 with bug fixes?

Cheers again for the info
