Do you have to drop model to canvas when bump mapping?

I’ve created a displacement map but I also want to add very fine detail to my skull using Bump map

I gave my skull the Bumpviewer Material but in this tutorial I am following he says to drop the model to the canvas by pressing G

Doesnt this make applying detail to the model harder as I cannot rotate the mesh?
Do I have to drop it to canvas?
