Just a question,the peice at the bottom if i want to add deifferent textures to each poly group do i have to split the modle into peices if not how do i assisn diff textures to each individual peice many thanks in advance

Short answer is yes, Shift+Ctrl+ L click to hide other groups. Paint away.
