Do I have to learn Maya before getting into ZBrush??

Hey there fellow ZBrushers.

I’ve been doing Solidworks for over a year now and I’m currently taking Maya class at school.

My goal is to do toy design, articulated action figures, and I also found out that many well known Japanese toy companies use ZBrush to both model a character and model articulated joints. So I want to do ZBrush.

With that being said I’m taking Maya class because I was told from a ZBrusher friend that I need to learn Maya first before getting into ZBrush.

And my Maya instructor told me that don’t get into ZBrush yet until I get some basic skill in Maya.

Where some other ZBrush users were telling me, why spend too much time in Maya with verticies when you can model things better and quick in ZBrush.

I’m a little confused about this debate.

I would like to have some good advice.

Thank you.

You 200% do not need Maya.
You’ll dislike Maya more if you start in Zbrush, but you sure as **** don’t need Maya first.
There are some tools that are way nicer in Maya, but mainly Zbrush wins.

You’ll also probably pick up Zbrush faster if you’re not coming from another 3D package for no reason.
Sculpting is the hard part, not learning Zbrush.
