Divide causing anomalies, please help

I’ve got a model built up in Max, with a simple sphere for a head so I can sculpt several unique heads. Unfortunately when I hit divide to smooth it all, the top point of the sphere-head makes a hole at the very top, and a long spike comes out the bottom, down to its feet.

What the hell is going on? I also had troubles with seams splitting on the shoulders and legs, but somehow managed to fix that in 3ds Max.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you have some strange, unwelded points after importing your base mesh. Possible fixes:

  1. On Import, make sure Tool->Import->Mrg is selected, and may be add a little “Weld” with slider (it controls the distance for welding.) You may want to export and import to do this if its already in Zbrush.
  2. If you don’t care about your current topology, the Tool -> Subtool->“Remesh All” will make a clean, unified skin of your current model and you can hopefully ditch the anomaly.
  3. Retopo and project with retopology tools or make a new, clean topolopgy outside of zbrush, taking care to ensure their are no unwelded points. Use attach the current problematic model to this new mesh and use Tool->Subtool->Project All to copy your details to the new mesh.

sounds like a pole to me. How many edges are at the top and bottom of that sphere?

Scale also sounds like an issue with the sphere. try tool>deformations>unify.

You can also create your “default” sphere right within Zbrush so you don’t have to worry about those problems…though too many edges attached to a pole will still create the same issue.
