Please forgive my inexperience, I’ve only owned ZB for several days…
My question is, why does my displacement map include all the height information that’s ALREADY contained in my base geometry?
I understood that the intensity of a pixel in a displacement map should indicate height ABOVE the polygon surface. So if my base polygon surface already has some height detail, why would my displacement map hold this same height detail, which would push my geometry too far if applied?
When I imported my OBJ into ZB, I made no sculpts or changes whatsoever to the mesh other than adding a couple of SDiv levels. So, I would expect any displacement map generated now to contain no information. But the map I generate appears to hold all the height information of my base OBJ…
The imported mesh is already quite dense and detailed, and I’m guessing this is the root of my problem, 100,000 points at base level. I realise that the detail in my mesh could, and probably should have been added in ZB, but I made this mesh before I owned ZB and my intention here is only to add some subtle surface details – and I thought that any displacement map generated would only contain any height changes made to the base geometry.
If anybody could help me to understand this a little better, I would be very, very grateful…
