Can anybody tell me what the advantages are if any, over using a displacement on a low subdiv model? I did this and rendered out, it took 55 seconds. Then I just imported the highres obj and it took 13 seconds to render. So my question is why do people still chose to render with displacements for still images?
I’m guessing that your high res model wasn’t all that dense? I think you’ll find that when you get up to massive poly counts in your mesh then it will render much slower. I could be wrong.
I actually don’t see why anyone would not use the high res if it’s just for a single frame unless the 3D application simply can’t handle the poly count.
Perhaps the examples of still imagery you have found that use displacement maps are in actual fact designed for games or production and have just been presented in this way for ZBC.
Displacement maps, even vector, still have a long way to come in my opinion.
Just my thoughts.
