i exported the displacement map from zbrush. when i open it in photoshop i noticed that grey (middle zero ) is not the real 50% grey. with the color picker it shows 58%. so to bright .
am i using wrong settings?

No, but your Photoshop color settings will affect the result. Assuming you are looking at a 16 bit displacement, the mid gray will most likely show as RGB 149,149,149. Switch to ‘Monitor Color’ and you’ll get RGB 128,128,128. This is simply how the file is displaying; the 16 bit color values are not changed - the mid gray point will be in the middle of the 16 bit range.
i just want an 8 bit displacement. and then the mid grey is wrong.
what settings should i use to change it back the the original colors?
thanks
As I said, it is how the file displays in Photoshop; the actual values are not affected (though the color picker displays adjusted values). To see it how you want switch to ‘Monitor Color’ in your Photoshop Color Settings. This doesn’t change the actual file gray values, which are already correct.
Why do you want an 8bit file? You can lose a lot of detail if you convert from 16 bit, leading to a ‘stair-stepping’ effect in your renders. This is because 16 bit has 65536 shades of gray whereas 8 bit has only 256 shades.
