displacement not generating properly

I’m having problems trying to generate a displacement map. I go to the lowest subdivision level turn on auv, bump the size to 4096 and hit generate displacement map. The progress bar finished as usual and the thumbnail of the map looks fine, but as soon as I highlight it to bring up the larger view its solid grey. If I export it and open in photoshop it’s still solid grey. I think things are sort of working because the preview thumbnail of the map shows the presence of detail but somehow it’s getting lost. I’m posting a screen shot to show what I mean. Has anyone ever experienced this or know how to fix it?

First thing: Press Alpha>Crop and Fill while the desired alpha is selected. This will fill the canvas with the displacement map. Do you see the details there? If so, then they are actually in the displacement map. It’s just that it’s a 16-bit map, which has more color variation than the eye can actually make out. But the computer has no problem.
